Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I'll fix 'em.... it's easy to lighten them :~D If you still have my email you can email them rather than bothering to load and post 'em.
Sorry I don't still have it.
Becky
FRMAIL :~)
I'll send the rest to you.
Becky
Very cool! Waiting for the rest of them!
Ok, you should have them. If they aren't night pictures I sent you the wrong ones.
Becky
I'm impressed. It's amazing how Rusty can lean like that and keep his balance and how you look so relaxed. I'm afraid my head would be on the right side of his :')
The qh started out with small sand crack - he was shod when we bought him - we planned to barefoot our horses but before we did anything he went lame - front foot - Farrier at barn where we had him boarded at the time said it was abscess - removed shoe - drained for about 2 weeks - we soaked it daily in apple cider vinegar 10 % solution. He put another shoe on and gouged out a big section of front of hoof - after 5 weeks - just before farrier visit he threw that shoe.... Farrier cut out an even BIGGER chunk - put on another shoe. It looked bad but we were OK - he was not in pain and being ridden
We moved the horses here and within a week or so he threw the shoe and started limping... This time we got a barefoot "expert" who said the farrier trimmed hoof wrong - causing crack to open up to top of hoof - said he has seedy toe, and false quarter and can't be ridden "anytime soon" - we are soaking again and just babying him....
He is a wonderful horse and we will get him well - it is just disappointing to have this happen when we were so excited about having them home to ride this fall..... Sorry this is so long - I am open to any and all suggestions.....
LOL. I was not relaxed at all. You can see me biting my bottom lip:)
Becky
I'm not sure but isn't seedy toe caused from founder?? If it is, IMO, the horse would need to stay shoed. But I am no expert:)
Becky
AW, your not bleeding:') Actually it looked like to me you were talking to him.
LOL, I think one of those pictures I sent you was just a barrel:). It was a test shot. Sorry.
Becky
You sound like you have a neat set up:).
My kids are grown now and married. But when they were young they use to take off on their horses around here. My daughter and 2 other little girls all had ponies and rode everyday. They were christened the neighborhood pony pack:) They were so cute, they'd take off bareback in bathingsuits to gallop thru puddles on the trails after a rain. What those ponies did for those girls:)
Becky
Hmmm.... pictures would be good to visualize the crack and the trimmings since. Have any pics? of feet or otherwise ;~D
An abcess can be a very painful thing, and serious cracks can take a LONG time to grow out, and always with good nutrition and good farrier work. What's his history that his feet were in that kind of condition when you got him? Is he recovering from laminitis or other neglect situation to his feet?
And ... Why the desire to keep them barefoot?
Yes, it was just a barrel ;~D
This one is Rocky, right?
Yeah the bottom one is Jenny on Rocky. Just dawned on me that's probably why I didn't see the slip, I was taking a picture, but I remember after I took the picture I was hollering at her that he wasn't running. He came in full blast, so I saw him slow up but didn't know why.
The second one is Kristy on Rowdy.
We didn't take any of the exhibitions because we all ran one after another.
Becky
OH, thanks for lightening them:)
Becky
Well, he's really leaning into that turn... if the footing wasn't ideal, I can see why it'd be easy enough to lose traction and slip.
Kristy actually ran a faster time then Jenny, but her time fell in between two divisions, so she was out of the money. Do you know what 4D's are?
Becky
