Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Hello, cowboy:)
OK, I just got in from feeding and Rocky didn't flinch at all when I ran my fingers over his hip. Wouldn't you think it could have just been a cramp? I'm thinking of buteing him again today, letting Heather and Co. ride him just at a walk for a short time. Then maybe ride him everyday like that and bute him again on Sat. and Sun. for precautionay sake, so he'll be good to go Mon. What ya think?

Sorry for the double post, but I've had trouble lately with things loading. I posted once and it didn't show up, reload twice and it still didn't show, so I posted it again and now it shows up twice.

Morning.... there is a timing issue 'round here where posts will appear in your comments, but not on the thread for a couple of minutes.
If Rusty's never been in the areana alone, it looks different. Remember when I told you my mustang froze up on me at my first jumping show? He'd been in the arena before, but never ~alone~. Only froze up the first time, then he was fine.
Wouldn't ~hurt~ to Bute Rocky again.
Glad you got a run in.... sorry it was so hard to accomplish with all the bum luck :~D
Well, I've run him at the arena here in our town, last night was in a differnt town. He sometimes tries to get out of going in here too. That's funny too, because until I got him he had never been arena worked, and I haven't done that much in them. They learn quick where they have to work and where they don't. He's in for a rude awakening, trails are going to be alot more work now. I haven't been that insistent on him working hard on trails for the last few years, because of his sweating problems. I've rode him alot, but not hard. I think today, we'll work on his attitude.
Becky
Heh.... Glad I am not Rusty today! ;~D
Glad you made it. to the arena:')
LOL. Well he's done stuff out on the trail like just stop. And I've always just let him stand there wondering if he was OK, then when I'd ask him to go he start with sidewise stuff. No more of that. He is really a smart horse. He's figured out that I always give him the chance to see if he was going to pee, or just needed to catch his breath. Last night going to the second barrel he even acted like he was going to buck, kind of humped up. He's going to learn that when I ask him to go I mean it and throwing a fit won't help:)
So, do you think, like in Rocky's case, it could have just been a cramp. I'm not sure if I need to worry about him:) (always something with these guys). Would you have it checked?
Becky
Thanks:)
Just making it there seemed like a major victory. By the time I got there, I was as nervous as a whore in church:) waiting for the next catastrophe.
Becky
Did he slip his butt out from under him and recover? Or did he go down?
I wouldn't think you'd need have him checked unless he was still lame ~next week~. If he hurts, it would be likely to be a muscle pull, and those just take time to heal. It could be he was just a little cold starting, or was expecting different footing. No harm in Buting him for a few days.
His butt just slipped. I've seen ALOT of horses there in the last few weeks slip going around the 1st barrel. I think there is a low spot there. He didn't go all the way down, just jerked hard Jenny said.
Would you ride him easy between now and Mon., do you think he should even go Mon.??
Becky
I'd get him moving today and see if he looks stiff. If it's a muscle pull he'd likely start out stiff after standing and then loosen as he goes. Lunge him both directions and see if he's even and willing. If he looks stiff, then Bute him and go easy on him for a day or two. Too early to tell about Monday. He might be fine after today.
That's kind of what I was planning. Just needed some imput:)
Becky
Yeah, I have to discipline me too:') I would rather just "ride". Before it was closed down I was always wanting out of the arena. Not it doesn't sound so bad:')
The horse hasn't been a big behavior problem on the ground. She just doesn't seem to know some stuff. She will sometimes try to weave in my space or try to walk faster and get ahead of me when we stop or want to follow me back out of the pature. Would like to lean on me when grooming too. Just manner stuff, I have been working with her on and shes getting better.
What I really meant by ground work was more arena work though. I had been really working on my feet on the ground stuff but we need controlled saddle work if I'm going to seriously think about keeping her. She throws me again and... No need in encouraging her with my lack of experience though. She just isn't sharp on turns and exercises and resistive. Give her a rut or trail though and she's comfortable. I kind of think she might have been run hard though before used . I have to use the longe line caz she thinks she's just supposed to run in the round pen and acts shy when stopped. So maybe she's just doing what she's been not taught to do. Who knows? I feel like I bought a "good" car that ran just fine until the warrenty expired and then problems start to show up:')
Your trailer isn't a shiny metal, is it?
I remember a horse quote that says "Courage is being scared to death, but getting on anyway" I forget who said it, though.
One of my favorite horse quotes is, "We've got little horses for little people, big horses for big people and for people that never rode a horse, we've got horses that ain't never been rode."
