Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Even though she has her baby there in the pasture with her, she probably had a pairbond with another horse where she used to live and she's missing him/her. Poor girl, I feel sorry for her. My first two horses, a mare and a gelding, formed a very strong pairbond and when I separated them when the mare was ready to foal, I think they both grieved. I got another brood mare with a colt by her side and put them together with her, but they have never bonded, and I actually think the mares hate each other. When the original mare foaled, she wouldn't allow any other horse near her baby, but one time when I brought her old buddy to visit, she met him at the fence and rubbed noses with him and nickered to him, all with the baby standing right there. It almost made me cry to watch them.
She did adjust fast. I really like her for ecurbh to work with. She may have other manners issues, she's pushy and nippy, but she doesn't get squirrelly when she's flustered or gets turned around in the lines, she just stops and stands there, which is a nice safe way to protest the situation. And eventually, I could just put pressure on her far rein and she figured out to turn and go forward again without me having to go to her.
I like my circingle, and I like those big soft lunge lines, but the lines are a little too fat to slide really freely through the loops. Stirrups on a saddle would almost work better driving, but we managed.
I've wondered if that was the problem with her:(, It is sad.
Becky
She looks like a great horse:)
I've wanted a curcingle (sp:) before, just never got around to getting one, and a saddle does work well enough for the little I need one for that.
I've been wrapping gifts. Figured wrapping makes such a mess, no sense cleaning good till that was done. It sure makes you tired tho, Still have quit a few to go too. And I thought this was going to be a slim christmas....
Becky
I still have to wrap one thing.... two long wooden planter boxes I got for my dad's lady friend. Not sure how to manage that. Oh - I better get to the feed store, I am out of squirrel food, and I was gonna get some bird seed to put in the planter boxes for now.
Thanks for the reminder....I've got to get horse feed tomorrow. I'm sure the feed store will be closed Fri. and that's the day I usually get it. Just thought of that.
Becky
You need to put a damp cloth in though if you want to get all the wrinkles out though:') (So I've heard of course) Welcome.
What is trot in hand?
You trotting along beside the horse holding the lead line:). I was NOT in shape to trot the distance the judges needed to see the horse move:)
Becky
Well not today. I'm "creaky" Even though the more I move the better I feel. The getting started part the kicker:')
I got this most unique thing from my sons MIL yesterday for Christmas. It's like a deep picture frame. Inside is a miniture wedding dress and uniform and all their wedding stuff Barbie doll size. She also sent me a photo album full of pictures. I had not seen anything like it. I felt bad because my other DIL looking at it too with a sad look. I told her if she wanted to re-marry my son we could do the wedding scene. She laughed and told me "never". Oh well I offered. Maybe I can pay "Debbie" to make her something like this regarding the boys. HMM or me one with the horses, huh?:')
Sounds unique all right! But how come you have opened it already? It's not Christmas yet!
We got a thank you for the present we sent to ecurbh's sister in law... I told him to tell her she wasn't sposed to open it and has to send it back!
He wouldn't do that ;~D
It wasn't wrapped:') She had it in a box covered with paper and bubble wrap. The boys and I had a good time playing with the stuffings. It doesn't take much to entertain them at that age (me either, I guess:') and a box a treasure.
You know, people don't seem to send thank you cards much any more around here. I send my neices and nephews stuff and never even hear if they get it.
True... that's a common complaint today.
No one is sure yet, why the horse died. She's still laying in the field awaiting the vet to come out.
Hubby has things lined up to bury the poor creature tomorrow.
Oldest daughter (OURS) has been sent into a total tail-spin over this. And I am thankful for that.
NOPE... I'm not a cold-hearted mom.
The death of Kelsi's(friend's) horse has torn down the walls that Markie(daughter) had erected after the death of her horse, Cassidy....two years ago, this Feb. 17th.
Cass was one of a kind. The horse seemed to have 'supernatural' traits/behaviors/understandings. I KNOW that she was put in our lives via GOD, and she manifested His grace towards us.
Feb. 17th was TWO days before Cass's 5th birthday. Markie was out with her, changing the water trough, grooming the horse, loving on her....she watched as her horse went to her knees, then laid flat out, then lifted her head and nickered to Markie, and she was gone.
While I was calling the vet, Markie just walked away and went to her room. Hubby and I cried....prayed.... tried giving the horse CPR....kept telling Cass don't give up, come back.
The vet said there wasn't anything that could be done, it was waaaay over for her. He looked over her bloodlines/registration papers. She was BRED to die......BOTH sides of her parents were strong in the Impressive lineage. (HYPP)
After Cassidy, Markie locked herself into a world where a horse was 'just a dumb horse'. Never once was a tear shed. Never once was a horse bonded to. She not only shut herself off from horse attachments, she ALSO shut off human attachments.
Today, tears washed away the walls.
Today, tears paved ANOTHER pathway to the Rainbow Bridge.
I'm all teared up. That's a hard emotional thing for a girl to see so completely without warning. I hope your daughter can heal and fall in love again... Gosh it can rip ya up, but it is so special to love them.
Let us know about the mystery of the other horse... My old one is 22, and I know one day I'll bury him but can't imagine it (and don't yet want to).
Your daughter and her friend have my sympathies, and my prayers.
This is the ONLY pic of Cassidy that survived the fire....
Oh dear... Now you've got me crying again!
Soooooo sorry. I did NOT mean to cause you or ANYONE sadness.
