Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I like the round pen -run them into submissive behavior kind of work as a game.... and it teaches them some very basic lessons, and done correctly can actually teach them to approach and be caught easier. But "move away from me" is not a very complex task, and doesn't teach them the manners and the gaits I want them to learn to do on command. I am looking to improve their precision in following commands at a higher level than "move faster" or "come over here".
Lungeing is like riding, one or the other needs to know how to do it for a beginner to learn. Either the lunger need to know for a beginner horse, or the horse needs to know for a beginner lunger. OR at the very least have someone who know there to coach when both are beginners. And lots of patience.
I'll probably give her a call next week and try to go help when we can coordinate times. Heather tries so hard, I hate leaving her hanging.

We are inspired to go work on Cyn a little, go out right now and try long reining her with the circingle. It gives a little more control over their ability to just turn and face you. I'll have to see if she'll fit into Bay's snaffle bit. We'll take pics, they might be helpful.
My mare didn't lunge when I first got her. To do competitive trails the horse either has to be lunged for the judge, or trot in hand. The first one I went to I did it in hand. That's for the birds:)
By the time I retired her, she did it soooooo pretty, Lunge one direction till I said whoa. then she'd make an instant stop, turn and go the other direction, then when I'd say whoa, she'd stop and turn and face me, but not walk to me. Actually made me look good, because it was all so smooth I never got tangle in the line or let it drag.
I've never worked that much with another to get them that smooth, but it was sure nice.

Well, the cold front has hit here. I doubt now I'll make it out to work any horses:(. Temps are dropping fast.
Becky
I too like for them to stop in their track and not come in unless you are gathering them in.
My pony is actually much more push button lunging with me than Bay is.... Bay gets up a head of steam and doesn't exactly stop when you tell him. one woah and Pony skids and plants it. When we were first starting her and the child was still trying to ride, the one thing we wanted her to have was a good stop. She has it ~now~.
Oh, and have fun:) and looking forward to the pictures.
Becky
Yeah - we have part sun for the moment, trying to get out the door before that changes.
Welcome, fellow Ohioan!
Yep, a stop is about the most important thing, and something I work on every time I go out. Yesterday at a lope Harley's stop left a lot to be desired at the start. He was stoping but throwing his head up, pointing his nose at the sky. He was doing better when we were heading home, but still needs some refresher work.

I'm going to try and use your 'space' to post a pic. Here goes.....
That is Mattaniah Rei...my horse, with one of the twins on board. 'Mattaniah' means gift from the Lord...'Rei' means my friend my companion.
Daughter # 2 on board.
BG is 3 y.o. Quarter pony 13.3-14 hh. She is the MOST sweetest horse one could hope for. She'll follow her people around like a puppy dog, and will try to help ya do whatever you're trying to do. She used to play with hubby's tools when he'd work on the vehicles.
The kids can do ANYTHING around this doll...........
He's @ 7y.o., Arab x, wacky as the kid, make a good pair! LOL. @ 14.3 hh.
Gotta run, daughter's friend's horse just died.
Oh dear! Talk to you when you get back!
Great pics of your crew of kids and ponies.... Look forward to more!
Getting started:
Couple foibles:
And then moving out really nicely. No more chasing her down Monty, she's just working in a circle.
But he got it figgered out...
Those are great. I have sort of done that by just running the lunge line thru a stirrup then behind the back cinch, Helps to keep them in the circle.
But it looks like she adjusted fast, and looks good moving. I especially like that last picture at the lope.
Becky
Very nice looking horses:)
Sorry about your friends horse. What happened.
Becky
Looks like you caught on good:)
