The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hah, we sure DO have horses.(or do THEY have US?) AND a donkey.(yup, he DOES have us!)

We've 4 horses plus the donk. Will soon be getting more.

Our closest and dearest friend is a horse trader and he is a frequent flier at Sugarcreek and Mineral Wells,WV.

I'd LOVE to post pix, but first have to figure out HOW. LOL.

We 'lost' 3. When someone torched our house, we headed up north OH to stay with friends. 2 of the horses were rescues and we weren't exactly in a position to 'properly' care for them, so I gave them to a local family that also ran a rescue. Have pix of them ALSO.

Don't tell my horses, but my heart ADORES that donkey!!!

I know. But when the toilet is turning green, it might be time to clean it:) (Just kidding).

I'm not stressing over the house if it gets done fine if not fine. But I'm making a stab at it.

I've got baking and food prep to do. I've got none of the Christmas presents wrapped....

Didja know that if you turn the dryer on again for another go round, it de-wrinkles them and gives ya few more minutes to FReep?

(at least that's what I hear)

I'll copy the post I made at the beginning of the thread on how to post pictures.
The pictures have to be online someplace. There are free places to load pictures, and www.snapfish.com and www.yorkphoto.com both work really well, and have an easy interface for loading pictures. They are free for a year, and they only want you to buy something once in awhile to keep your account, like prints or a mousepad with your photo on it. They have cool stuff to buy, but you can worry about that later.

Anyway.... upload the pics there, and when they are uploaded, right click the pic and view the "Properties" of the pic. Right click on the web address 'url' for the pic, 'select all' and then 'copy'. Then paste that code (all of it, they can be long) into this 'image source' html code:

<img src="http:\\url here">

The code to post one of my earlier photos:

If you were to right click the pic above, the properties of the pic are all this gibberish: http://images.snapfish.com/33%3B8748323232%7Ffp63%3Dot%3E2329%3D%3A3%3A%3D768%3DXROQDF%3E23235%3C5996677ot1lsi

when you type the img src code, it looks like this:

<img src="http://images.snapfish.com/33%3B8748323232%7Ffp63%3Dot%3E2329%3D%3A3%3A%3D768%3DXROQDF%3E23235%3C5996677ot1lsi">

It sounds complicated, but take it step by step and it really isn't.

Neat that you take on rescues, and I also adore donkeys and mules. I ride english, used to show in both Arabian and jumping shows, my husband is a fairly new rider on his first horse, and we mostly ride trail when we get the chance.

When it rains it pours:) I just got a call from Heather. She's working with some horse, I think I told you about it awhile back. She's trying to lunge it. She had never lunged a horse. I let her work with Harley. She's having trouble with this horse she's messing with. From the desciption of what it's doing sounds like it's never lunged...sigh, how do you tell someone over the phone how to lunge???

Just got back from taking all 5 kids to the dentist. What an ordeal.

Too funny! I just love those videos where the "trainer" is showing how to work with a problem horse and the horse is gentle as a kitten. Only once have I seen a trainer that actually worked with a problem horse and it was Chris Cox. He was working with a confirmed bucker and that horse bucked like a booger. Ol' Chris stayed with him and worked it out of him but that horse will never be suitable for anyone but a professional, in my opinion.

I despise Dennis Reis. That guy is such a doofus.

I have enough trouble with Hair right next to me helping. Bay was easy, he'd just go. But Cyn needs some... encouragement. She'll just stand there staring at me while I keep making kissy noises and telling her "walk". I try using the whip, but that tends to confuse both of us for a while, till we finally come to an understanding, and she starts to move. Then when we try to change direction, it's back to square one.

I have several books on horses in the movies and a trip wire and running w are 2 different things. The pic you posted is what they used in the movies except those lines that go towards the horses back end instead went to the riders hands. That way, at the operative moment, they jerked those lines and pulled the horses feet out from under them. Or they also tied the lines to a tree and the horses ran until they reached the end of the wires. The trip wire was a wire running between 2 points that the horse wouldn't see. I'll find my books and post the titles and authors if anybody wants to read them. There are some horrendous pics in them of the running w in action. Also, it explains in the book that the "running" in running w refers to how the wires are run, not the horse running.

By the way, I didn't mean that you were using something inhumane on your horses, I was just giving info on what a running w used to be used for.

Bay's been doing a long time, for one, but he's also more classicly or English trained on lunge. There is some body language used, but he's primarily trained on voice commands with me standing fairly stationary in the center. Cyn's one of them John Lyons round pen horses. She only goes if you are chasing after her... if you stop, she stops and comes toward you. She'll come around, with more of it... until then, it's a workout for both of ya. ;~D
