The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Let me clarify. The girl with the POA's would/might do the things I suggest "except" sell them. Which would be for the best for her, but I wouldn't mind working with them, if there's not a bad problem. Also these horses are just up the road from me, I wouldn't have to keep them here.

It's a worthy project if you're willing... but be prepared if you get on.... those little guys are plenty capable of bucking hard, and there's precious little to hang on to. The feeling on my pony is that your legs are just dangling in air, or would meet underneath her. The little POA I trained could buck pretty well too, it wasn't so far to fall, but a had a foot stick in a pony saddle with stirrups that were really too small for me. Foot hung there for one sharp jerk with me draggin. Then it pulled loose, but it wrenched my knee.

Oh, I know a little one can stomp you in the ground as fast as a big one. I know it's probably just me. But I've always had more confidence on smaller horses. And I wouldn't get on it anyway till I'd done alot of ground work. Till I had a good feel about what it would do.

I'm willing because it would be a good learning experience for me for the new one I'm expecting next spring. I did the ground work with Dot and when Jenny got on her the first time and ever since, she's been fine, never bucked, reared or tried to take off.

I've always wondered if you could do that with an older one, and think you could IF there was no big problems already there. What you think?

They are really easier to work with on the ground. My pony may jump around, but it's a lot easier to manage than a big horse.

The next time I'm in town I'll get my camera and take pictures of them. The momma horse is like a leopard spotted app, but her spots are blonde. The baby is solid palamino. They're both built nice for ponies.

You'd have to see how much confidence you learned working with her. With my pony, she came with a lot of emotional baggage from wherever she started. She panics. I've worked with her a lot... sacking her out some, lunging her with boots and bags of things flopping on her sides tied on my circingle.... reining and driving her.... she is really good with me now... I just wonder if anyone but me could work her. I don't know if her increased trust is with people or just me in particular.

If they don't come with issues, they can be real easy, you'll just have to trust your instincts.

The little yearling, you can also do a lot with, she can lead and tie and even pony, but she shouldn't be lunged. Too hard on young joints.

Yeah, that was what I was going to tell her. That it would be good to go ahead and do some stuff with that baby.

A few weeks ago a round pen showed up where these horses are:). I laughed and told Mack, "bet she's been watching John Lyons, and got the magic cure all round pen."

I'm not saying I wouldn't use it, but so many people around here that I have known, always try the round pen before finally seeking help. Those TV trainers are as guilty of screwing people, IMO, as those people who sell unbroke horses to beginners.

Oh, bummer. We're in the teens this morning but the fog has finally lifted and the sun is shining.

Boy, sounds like you could have your hands full training horses and kids anytime you decided to give it a try. :)

Yeah...LOL...just after I had decided I didn't want to turn the horses into a business:)

Well, I would like to see these horses first, before I decide to work with them or turn them down.

The POA's would be the easiest because they are just up the road. I see them everyday. With my mare coming home in FEB. I really don't want any more horses here.

Especially when they have the gall to produce a video titled "working with the problem horse" and the horse ~never~ acts up on film. "oh look honey! we just need to speak equus and they'll understand!"

That's the $64 question. How much baggage this mare has already.

I've wondered. Ever since they got her, she spends alot of time pacing up and down the fence line by the road. That kind of surprised me beings as she has a pasture buddy. Does that mean anything?

Also one of the people I know that knows her, helped her once because the owner couldn't even catch the mare. Now the momma always has a halter on. So there could be some big distrust of people in this horse already. Or it could be she just hasn't been handled much. That's why I say, this horse may not even be ready to start lungin which is what the owner wants to learn to do. And I'll bet since the round pen showed up she wants to do that free lunging shit. I hate that concept. It gives alot of false security. If that's what she insists on, I won't do it.

Have fun :) Remember POA's are just little apps. They like to be asked, not told. They give up if you keep asking.

Are there horses across the road?

Sounds like a few challenges... hopefully only enough to make it a fun project!

No. There are no horses around that that horse can see from it's pasture.

Kind of makes me sad when I see here doing it. She's got that head hanging down, pacing back and forth, dejected looking, she has a pretty good ditch wore now.

Sad. Do they at least go out and pet her and handle her alot or are the horses kindof left to themselves?

In the 6 months they've been there, I've only seem them out there twice with them. They live where I can't see them, I only see them when I'm going to town, so she may go out there everyday, but I have doubts. The mom was pregnant for awhile, then miscarried, and is just now getting back to normal. The horses look good tho, always have a round bale.

If weeks can go by without interference, that is what can make them hard to catch.

Good Lord....just when I was getting ready to log-off and start laundry , I discover THIS thread.

I never even KNEW 'we' had such a thing here at FReeperville.

I think it's great! Now I can compete with our oldest daughter for 'horsey chats'. (she is a HorseCity kid)
