The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Sounds like you had a nice day.

I've been stressed wondering how I was going to get everything ready for Christmas. So I decided I'm not working this week:). Staying home all week to cook, bake, clean and RIDE, some. Just finished the last of my christmas shopping on line:).

I feel so much better:). LOL....now it seems I really don't have that much to do.

Working full time is going to take some getting use too.

Glad you got back into the saddle today and had a couple good rides! They do get all squirrelly and coiled when it's windy.

It does take awhile for people to get used to working. I used to work social services - employment counseling for welfare to work folks, and it's amazing how many get jobs and immediately feel overwhelmed and lose them. Job retention, convincing them that they actually will figure out how to function and do laundry and shop and all those things after work really does get easier.

And after working at home for the past three years, I have become completely inefficient about chores. I almost think I need to get back out.

I'm just thankful it's my own business, and not going full force yet, so that I can shut it down this week. I needed to get somemore shirts in anyway, I was getting low. The shirts should be here Wed. and I got the new transfers last Fri.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a slower week, and getting to ride. Just praying the weather cooperates.

Just got here and haven't read the rest of the thread but the answer IMHO is no. Horses are basically lazy and don't work out to develop muscle or endurance unless there's a human there to insist.

I had heard somewhere that unless it was alfalfa there wasn't much caloric value and that it was basically just for digestion. Never knew they could get fat just eating the stuff all day. I really did think that if they were out in the pasture they kept themselves in shape. Okie does, but he likes to run and play chase.

It adds up but I was buying the disposable cameras and having Walmarts put them on a disc. Good pictures too:')

Sounds like you had a good time. The wind blowing and the horses here a little jumpy too, today.

Marking you territory, huh? My husband and I have serious discussions about that every time we go to our lake property:'). Tonight, we saw on the net that a tornado hit the area Dec 8th with extensive mobile home and shed damage. I hope we still have a camper and barn. We'll find out tomorrow.

It's good you can somewhat control your work hours. You ought to get you a "gone riding" sign, be back at___:')

Some horses are just easy keepers and stay fat on very little. A true grass belly (I don't think it looks like your horse has one) is not really "fat". I've seen horses with grass bellies that in reality they're not fat at all. Their butts won't be nice and round and they can still have ribs and back bone showing above their big bellies. The big belly is from being full of undisgested hay/grass. Your horse doesn't look bad at all where her weight is concerned from what I see in the pictures. She just may be a little soft.

As far as a horse staying in shape on their own. I was talking about one staying in shape enough to do strenuous work once a month or so. I was surprised by the amount of people at the competitions I went to who didn't ride much and claimed thier horse was in shape is what I was talking about. I had those people sometime tell me I "over" conditioned my mare.

I just could not get excited about shopping this year. It's going to be slim:)

29 degrees here this morning and very windy, so it's very cold. The forecast last night said it was suppose to get to 61 tho, but then get real cold the rest of the week. Today may be my riding day.

I slipped out and opened Bay's stall so he could go out and pee, and now one of the horses is bangin' their feed pan.

Good Morning everyone! It was only 3 degress this morning.....brrrr. I am sure glad my truck was in the garage last night. But, there is hope. I got my first seed catalog, and tomorrow is the shortest day of the year. Days will start getting longer now.

The horses finally were turned out Saturday. A week of deer gun season, and another of rain, kept them cooped up. The new filly has a problem with her back feet (mental). Two farriers have not be able to trim them. My daughter worked with her, and she is ok now, with the fronts. I would hate to use a twitch and scare her more.
