The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I tried to catch some unusual poses in the pasture but she thought I wanted to walk and wouldn't leave my side and then I see that I caught this.

The stable owner looked at her and didn't think she was expecting. She said she didn't look wormy either. She agreed she had a big belly and I guess this plays into todays topic because she thinks she just has a grass belly because I'm not working her enough anymore:'(. What's a grass belly? She told me it wasn't bad.

Hi there.... she looks good.

And... I think you defined what a grass belly is in your own post! ;~D

Yeah. I'm not exercising her enough, I guess. Is too much grass a concern though for impactions and stuff?

Im assuming she's not moving about enough to pass the stuff and it just sits there.

Cindy, she's just not as trim as she would be if she were working out every day. Same as any of us, same as most of our pleasure horses. ;~D

Impaction from grazing? no... horses are designed to process grass. Impactions are more frequent if they eat a lot of grains, pellets, or sand and are too dehydrated to break it up. There's a long answer that could go into the dangers of foundering on too much rich grass, but I'd be willing to bet it isn't a fear you need to worry about in a boarding stable common pasture area that is probably pretty well grazed, especially this time of year. Just for conversation sake, how big is the pasture, how many horses are on it, and how thick and tall is the grass?

No - that's not what she means... It means she's fat, not that she's bloated on food.

She's sitting on the couch eating Bon Bons all day is all.

Hell, I'm just glad she's not pregnant:') I can live with this as long as it isn't unhealthy. I do feel bad about not exercising her more lately. I'm one of the one's who was thinking she got lots of exercise on her own. The pasture big. Maybe an arce or more. Good hay brought in.

I guess what I saw as thin, actually flabby. You see how narrow her front is. You can't see because of her big butt but her flanks kind of flat.

An acre isn't very big. My pasture is over three acres and was overgrazed down to nubbins with just Bay and the Pony on it.

She's fine. She does get some exercise at pasture. Most of our horses don't get worked much in winter. She's in fine enough shape to pack you around the arena a few times when you get around to it... I don't think you get on and run her to exhaustion.

Well we both did get a little exercise walking around the pasture today:') I have her where she will stop and turn left with me without touching her. Turning right I just have to lay my hand lightly on her neck. At first I just wanted her to go on so I could take some pics but she didn't understand.

Just to set the record straight, we trotted around the arena FOUR laps the other day without stopping. (and yes I was on her) :')

Well today the start of a new week for me. So far, I'm glad I kept her. She did show her butt about taking her wormer today after I bragged about how good she takes it. Not much to the ivermectin and I wasn't about to waste any of it.

She doesn't really even look like she has that much of a grass belly, and not even close to what a pregnant mare can look like (LOL...she'll probably be pregnant now:) in the pictures.

I went to a seminar about feeding horses once, and the guy there said a grass belly is from grass/hay that is not easily digestable and takes awhile so it stays in them longer. Not anything to really worry about.

Took a little ride today. Rode that new green broke gelding first. The wind has been blowing hard all day and he saw the boogie man everywhere. He was a little jumpy at first but finally settled down.

Got the stud out next and he was a little feisty too. Rode a few trails and up to the neighbors to say hello. All the way back home he was bowed up and ready to go. I love that old boy. He's really level headed, but you know you got a lot of horse under you and it just feels good.

Me and the dogs are sittin around by the fire right now. Just walked out in the yard to let the dogs relieve themselves (all us dogs) and the snow was starting to fly.

Gave the horses an extra half measure of grain tonight. They stay out on pasture all the time and need a little extra heat this time of year.

No pictures. Don't have a digital camera. Ex-wife got custody of the one we had and I haven't bought another one. Guess I need to look into getting a little cheap one to keep in my coat pocket.

Damn, it was cold. :~)
