Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Oh - and you're probably right about the house too ;~D
Morning. I have to get moving. I was going to get up at 6 and go to town but it caught up with me and I slept like a baby. My bedroom a mess. Gonna go check on the horses first and track down the Salvation Army guys to take a picture then I need to get back here. I'm meeting myself coming:')
Is there anyway that you can get yourself into a lesson program to start riding? Are there any barns in your area?
I owned a pest control business for several years, so maybe I can offer a little advice.
The best defense is a good poison. Most of them contain Bitrix, which is the most bitter substance known to man. Most animals can't tolerate it, but rodents can't taste bitter. You should still try to put it in places that your pets can't get to it, but if that is not an option, use bait stations which are cheap and quite effective. Don't use poisons with wafarin as they take multiple doses before they work. There are several single dose poisons that are quite effective. In case of an accidental poisoning of a pet, vitamin K is the antidote for most rat poisons.
Most of the poisons come in either toss packs for indoor use, or weather proof blocks for outside use. Use a little peanut butter or vanilla to mask your scent.
The most effective defense in a good snake or a cat which ever you prefer.
Thanks but NO SNAKES! :') Cats are ok but I don't have much luck with them. We have (or had) a big open field behind us and got occasional snakes or rats (and rabbits) My husband putting out rat poison on the fence line and around the house today. I just got back from the feed store loaded with ivermectin and big rat traps. I don't like the poison traps either. I don't even want a rat to suffer and they stink after they die.
That's what is good around here. If you take lessons you can get loaners to practice and ride.
Yes, pregnant horses should be wormed. But why are you uncertain about yours? How could she be pregnant?

I don't but little things sometimes add up and the thought does come up that I hope I didn't buy an expecting horse. I'm fixing to worm her again and I just wondered.
If you think there is any chance, I'd get her checked. ;~D
Why hair? What would the vet do? If she is, the ah.. outcome already determined.
If she is, you can plan for it. There is pre-natal care that should be done, she should be taken off fescue grass, given a good mare and foal feed, given an additional round of shots to boost the immune system she can give the baby, and as the day gets closer she shouldn't be pastured in the mud with other horses.

And FWIW, I would doubt she is. It's rare for a horse to accidently end up pregnant. Stallions aren't usually roamin' loose in neighborhoods. ;~D
If they had bred her, they could have perhaps marketed her for more money in foal.
Oh. No, I think I would rather not know :') Prenatal care for horses huh? Sigh. I'll think about it. I've just been trying to keep from running to the vet and have done real good up until now. If she's not, I'm gonna look awfully dumb and get the "real" cowgirl eye rolls again. Maybe, I'll just have him do a check up because I've gone thru the worm rotation and her belly getting bigger. He needs to actually see her anyway.

Something else I noticed today too. She's real firm around her rib cage but at the back where side meets flank she's pouched out. It's soft like fat and more noticable on the right side. It's not tender or feel like a growth but there.
I dunno, Cindy... She may just be gettin' fat. ;~D
