Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
We arw having really heavy fog. Have yall ever rode in it? Do your horses get spooked?
Can't remember riding during foggy conditions but if it is in an area they are familiar with you should not have any problems. Just my 2 cents...... : )
It has rained so much here that the pond floated away ... ducks and all.......
Only kidding but it has rained a lot the last few days.
Good morning.
Hair: Rusty will try to nip given the chance. When I first got him I could tell he wanted to bite when you pulled the cinch, so I kept my eye on him about that, wouldn't even let him turn and look while I did it. I had a feeling he might mip at other times. I had two different friends come and where standing letting him sniff, and I told them to be careful. They both said he's all right, just about the time he nipped them. Kind of aggravated me that they didn't pay attention like I told them too. I think on that habit prevention is better then curing.
I have to haul water from the house a few times thru the winter. It's no fun:). Every year I say I'm going to get a heater for the trough....

I don't think herds die off because the stud runs the babies off. I think a young stud that has been run off from another herd moves in and runs an older stud off. I think:)

I've rode in the fog lots of times. I haven't noticed that horses are anymore spooky then they would be normally. I think it's kind of fun in the fog. Sounds are muffled and things seem different, like you're riding thru a dream:)
How's the lessons going?
Becky
I was thinking if your horse not afraid of what he can't see that fog riding would be interesting. How do you watch where yall are going though?
Well, I'm pretty familiar with all these trails around here. At a walk you're not really at risk of running into something, and horses are pretty good at knowing where their at.
Actually, I almost said in my last post that they would be less spooky, because they can't see so much, but I'm not sure about that. Is all I know for sure, is I haven't noticed them being "more" spooky.
I've always gotten nervous when riding when I come to a big open field, probably because I'm more use to riding in the woods on narrow trails. Humans would more naturally take off and run and cut capers in the open, so I always think horses want to take off and buck. But I don't think horses view things the same as humans. They don't think like we do. So if you have a horse that is good on clear days, or on narrow trails, they are probably going to be the same in fog or open places:).

Good Morning All
When temps get real cold here in Chicago I use clean plastic milk gallon jugs, fill them with boiling hot water, carry out two at a time a few times a day, to keep water from freezing, easier on back.
Good morning everyone!
Very sad morning for me. I just got a call this morning that a dear dear friend of mine (39) passed away after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
She leaves 3 children and a husband.
But she is hurting no more and in the arms of her Lord.
Good morning...
I don't recall horses getting spookier in fog either... It's quiet and deadening. not like they do when it is windy and brisk!
Sorry p2B.... She was so young. Very sad.
Oh, and how I LOVED to get up on a morning like that and get on my mare and prance down the trail. They blow, and their ears are pricked, and you can feel the tension in their neck, tail's are raised ... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, memories
Boy, I really am lazy.... it's been a lot of years since the last time I had the urge to take off and cut capers across a field. ;~D
Yep.... they get all frisky!
Hey - how's the business doing after the first week?
Sorry to hear about your friend. It's especially sad knowing that she was so young. I know that she leaves a huge hole in a lot of hearts. But it's alot easier knowing that she's gone home to the Lord. I'll pray for her family.
Thanks,Frog.... and Hair.
