The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Are they part of a larger herd?

No, that's it. Most of the bands are just a few horses. I think the largest I've ever see was 18 in one band.

I wonder why they stay separate instead of joining up with other bands. Do only the ones born into a group stay together?

Well, the land really doesn't support large groups. Then the stud will chase off his sons and daughters when they are about two or so. So the nuclea is always just him and his mares.

Your trees and area that you live in are incredible. I'll have to show your snow pic to my kids so I can listen to them complain that we don't get snow. Actually, we do, but not very often and when we do, it's always melted by the next day.

Good morning.

Duchess: Neat pictures:) We use to have some wild horses around here. They've all been caught now tho. The first year we lived here, 24 years ago, they came up by my house. There was about 5 of them.

Ooooooo, big trees with snow on 'em. It just doesn't get much better than that! Except for maybe Duchess's mountains with snow on 'em. I don't know, I like 'em both! :o)

Thanks Cav! Those times were fun. I need to find a good parade to ride Blade in this year. Nothing quite breaks a young horse in quite like riding them in a parade. Especially ones where the Shriners are riding their little crazy cars and have the "Frisky Freak" with the fire shooting out the bottom. Ambulance sirens and marching band flags do a pretty good job too though. ;o)

I hate frozen water buckets, though :~\

Morning all.

I used to live in Michigan. First winter I was there had a hell of a time with water. Over the summer I bought a couple of those Tupperware 100 gallon water troughs and the 1500 watt heaters that install in a prefabbed plug in the bottom of the trough. Ran the wire out to the troughs and was ready for winter.

The next winter came and no more frozen water. And when the water got low, I'd fill it full of snow, which was in steady and abundant supply, and I didn't have to fool around with frozen water hoses.

Cool picture Duchess! I love it when the fog does that. It makes everything look like it's made of diamonds.

I finally broke down and bought one of those too and I love it. I don't have the plug heater yet but I'm going to get one. We have one of those big tall faucets out by the fence that lets the water in the pipe drain back down into the ground and I put a quick disconnect on the hose so I can unhook it real easy and let the hose drain too. I hope it all works. We'll see I guess.

I used to have an old bath tub but it was so low that the horses would get in it and play and get the water all muddy and paw the stopper out too, making an even bigger mud hole. A horse in a bath tub looks pretty funny. One cold winter night when Blade was still a baby, he got in there and slipped down and fell. He was outside the tub, but was laying so close to it that he couldn't get his legs back up under him, plus he was in a puddle of water. It was after normal feeding time but my husband just happened to go out there for some reason and found him, otherwise he would've frozen to death. It was really weird, because he NEVER goes out to check on the horses, but did this time. I guess Blade's Guardian Angel was watching out for him that night.

Additional proof that a horse is just an accident looking for a place to happen. I've had some of mine get into some of the damnedest situations. And if they ever panic, look out! Somethings gonna break.

Thank you and good morning! This is our little place here.... We are just renting, it's not much but it's cheap! And fabulous for the horses. It'll work until we are ready to buy our big piece of ground for the boarding stable :~D

We never did get that wind they predicted.

Cowboyway.... I love those heated water buckets. They'd be a little bit of a luxury here, because I think "well, we never have ~that~ many mornings of frozen buckets". But about the third day in a row, that luxury sounds more reasonable!

I can't believe you have a heated water bucket in Alabama! I didn't know it ever froze there!

Good morning everyone.

Seeing the bands of wild horses are good for the soul :)

We have the heaters in about half of our water troughs, no electricty yet to the goats and the four horses at the walk in shelters. Very nice to have, although ups the electric bill considerably.

I've still got the troughs and the heaters are still installed but I don't plug the heaters in any more now that I'm in SC. It gets cold enough for standing water to freeze, but that's usually just an overnight problem that the next days sunshine solves.

But if that reverse global warming ever happens, I'll be ready! :~)

Especially if they get hung up on something tied.

Hey - my husband's horse (notice how ownership passes when they're bad? ;~D) took a pass at me this morning at breakfast! I was in the pony's stall but standing with my back to Cyn's, actually doing Cyn a favor, because the pony will come there and try to mooch grain when she's done with her own. She can't get any, but she harasses, and they pick at each other. So I was blocking and petting the pony.

Well, so basicall I was between 'em, and Cyn got confused about whether or not ~I~ can stand there.. She reached over her wall and tried to bite me in the shoulder. Feels more like an impact than a bite because she lunged at me.

Well, I hollered and ecurbh handed me the lunge whip and I whacked her a few times (she has her blanket on so it just makes noise) in the stall like anyone would who's been surprised out of their temper, and she didn't get the rest of her breakfast.
