The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Heh! No Morning Glory vines on my "Planters" but I did find a small skunk bedded down under the seat in one last week. He and I had a spray contest and he lost. I used a spray can of purple medicine used to treat wounds on livestock.

The skunk waddled off sporting a purple-tinge to it's white stripe..... : )

Good Morning!!

I was reading through the interesting worming posts, it's always good to read what systems other people use. I use Strongid C 2X daily and ivermectin every 6 months, year round. You can buy the generic Strongid and it's a little cheaper. I've never heard of it being hard on horse livers and this worming system was recommended by the vet. I have one horse that is extremely hard to paste worm, that's why I use the strongid, that way I only have to fight him every 6 months.

I used to give the whole tube, but my old gelding, Tennessee, weighs more than 1250 lbs so I've started giving the younger, smaller boys only enough for 1000 lbs since I know they weigh less than that, then giving the rest of theirs to Tennessee to make sure he's getting enough. He sure doesn't appreciate getting dosed 3 times either.

I love night parades best of all. The lights are prettier, plus I like to put battery powered lights on my horse. It just seems to make everything more magical, to me anyways.

I've always had success with grabbing their tongue and pulling it out to the side like the vet does when he floats their teeth. It keeps their mouth open long enough and wide enough for you to get it on the back of their tongue really good, plus it's kinda hard for them to raise their head up higher than you can reach or run off when you've got them by the tongue. ;o)

I use to give Rocky less then the whole tube and gave his left over to the one horse we use to have that was bigger.

I've only been to the night parade once since they started doing it at night. Too cold for me to stand out on the street:)

Cav and I used to do 2 night parades every year, but the biggest one got really picky a few years ago with their rules for horses. All horses had to wear a "poop bag". Now how in the heck are you gonna get a bag on a saddle horse?! On a buggy horse, you've go the harness to hook it to, but on a saddle horse, there's nothing. All they had to do was have a clown or somebody with a rolling garbage can and a scoop follow along behind. I think it was just a way for them to get out of letting horses in the parade. It really hacked me off too. Then to add insult to injury, Cav sold all his horses and quit riding so I haven't had a parade buddy since. I went to a couple of smaller, daytime parades but it just wasn't the same. {snif} {pout}

Parades without horses just aren't parades if you ask me. When I was a kid, the horses were always the part I looked forward to the most, even more than Santa Claus. Even now when I watch the Rose Bowl Parade, I'm always watching for the equestrian groups more than anything else. Has anybody else had any trouble with their towns restricting horses in parades?

Good morning.... it's pouring here and will keep pouring all day, we expect, and we are expecting wind later, so it's a good day to be inside. I put the horses back out into the front pasture though, where they and the fence are not susceptible to any falling trees or limbs like they are in the back forty woods. They don't care why, they like being out on grass again.

My drainage ditch is working as well as it can, but everything's muddy on a day like this, unless I just paved the dang paddock :~D

Good morning. Much warmer here today but heck of a wind blowing. I took a couple of pictures of the one band of wild horses I saw coming in - I'll post them tonight.

The information on MS which I find really interesting.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4072819.stm

MS risk 'linked to birth month'

Being exposed to too little sunlight during pregnancy could be a factor
Children born in May have an increased risk of going on to develop multiple sclerosis, research has suggested.
The analysis of MS rates among over 42,000 people born in the northern hemisphere showed a significantly lower risk for those born in November.

The effect was most evident in Scotland, where the prevalence of MS was the highest.

I worm year round too.

Do you have flies year-around? We don't have any flies between October and March or so, so I usually hold off. Some people choose to do a double dose of the Pyrantel Pamoate during the dormant months, but I have forgotten the reasoning behind that, both the high dosage and the timing.

I also think you guys worm twice as often as I do, I do it every eight weeks. Is this also regional?

Speaking of falling trees and branches, my sister has had trees/limbs fall on 2 of her horses. The first time it was a big limb that fell on one of the mares during a storm at night. It pinned her to the ground and my BIL found her the next morning. He thought she was dead but she wasn't, she was just exhausted. You could tell by all the churned up dirt around her that she had been struggling all night long and had finally given up. He got the chainsaw and cut her out and she never moved the whole time he was doing it, but she got up when he was finished. She had some pretty bad scrapes, but other than that was ok. The other time, the whole top of a tree blew out and landed on the awning of the barn where a different mare was standing and knocked it down on top of her. She never knew what hit her. I had never heard of trees falling and hitting any body else's horses before and thought it was real weird that they had it happen twice. My BIL is one of these people that refuses to cut a tree, no matter how close it is to the house or barn. Big trees in a wind storm scare me to death!

No, we don't have flies year round but the winter season is so short here that I don't see much point in changing my routine. We haven't even had a hard freeze here, yet. The trees are still changing colors. The bright red ones are the prettiest.

I do think the recommended dosing on paste wormers is every 8 weeks. For people at public facilities or known wormy areas, I don't think it hurts anything to worm once a month.

And you tell me these stories today? :~D

I live in a mobile under several firs that are a couple feet in diameter and a couple hundred feet tall! I love my trees, but I fear them in high winds!

My house and barn are back in there :~D
