Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I give the entire tube. I figure they are going to waste a little anyway.
I give the entire tube to both horses, I dial it back to 800 pounds for the pony.
That would be a winner for me!
That's pretty much what I do too. I've only had one horse that was over the weight for one tube. I've always wondered if that was a good or bad thing to do.
I know Rocky wastes alot. He is very hard to worm. Hates having his mouth messed with. When I do get it in, he won't swallow. Once he held it so long in his mouth it sort of melted and came running out. Now I just keep poking the tube up the side of his mouth to get him to swallow. Any better suggestions on how to make a horse swallow:)?
Becky
I try to get it as far back as possible and hold there heads up until they swallow. Works for Cindy so I use it on them too:') They still drool it on their gums and Sarah Lee spits. I know someone that has a horse that is hard to worm that started mixing it in apple sauce.
Wow.... no, I've never had a horse that refused to swallow... My labrador used to be a pro at that with pills. Then he'd pretend to swallow, but hack the pill back up the minute I walked away.
Bay and Cyn are both easy.... the pony plays head-bobbing games for five minutes or so before I can get near her with it. But if I can get it in her mouth, I'm pretty quick.
What if you gave him a handful of grain right after? Would he refuse it?
or an apple. ;~D
I've tried all those things. I think he really doesn't like the taste. He takes a bit with no problem. Just doesn't like to be wormed. I'm just thankful he's not very tall.
Becky
Cindy is the worse. She's held them probably 10 minutes. I have to straddle her and hold her mouth closed and up (not extended, just level) She won't spit it out the sides . I've noticed my horses are the same. They don't spit it out on the corners but work it to the front of their mouth.
Okie acts like he likes it. I learned fast to untie them to do it though:')
A horse would be hard but I gently stroke Cindy's neck to stimulate swallowing sometimes too.
Yeah - same with the pony, she'll leap completely off the ground if I force her, but at least she's little and can't stick her nose out of my reach. I just hang on with the wormer touching her face until she relaxes some. and yeah, Cindy, it used to be longer. She just used to panic and blow up so bad about everything.... She's gotten a lot better, because I've never lost my temper with her. But I've never let her win either. :~D
Mine have never failed to swallow, they open their mouths and work their tongues and go 'bleah'... but they swallow it just to get ride of it, then they get an apple.
Well, you're doing better then me. I've lost my temper before with Rocky, especially when I see the whole tube of paste running out of his mouth. I've had to finally, a few times grab his ear and twist, or twitch his lip, but none of that helps with the swallowing. He just won't swallow.
Becky
That is confoundingly stubborn!
Yeah, it's about the only thing I've ever had trouble doing with him. Guess I shouldn't gripe.
Becky
I've lost my temper in life, and sometimes with horses, but with this pony she'd just blow up till she broke something or hurt herself. She has a really easy panic button to trip, and I've spent years trying to assure her that I will never be inhumane or unfair. She almost believes me...
Well she knows now it's not going to hurt her and that good things happen when done. She probably isn't going to admit that to you though:') I usually give mine an apple bar just to get the taste out.
