The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Man! Now THAT's a horse shoe! You'd knock the post down if you were playing with those.

Those horses are very good at what they do. My horse seemed glad to have a horseman on his back instead of somebody who was just using him as a glorified 4 wheeler.

Probably a more natural gait here, english and western. Some horses get more height naturally, and some can be "encouraged" to get more height. But they are pretty much built where their hind end is up under them and their heads are up and the break over higher at the knee.

Now if we could just show 'em the Speed class that they have at the Racking Horse Celebration. Have you ever seen it?

Those are beautiful to see - I'm so glad to hear there is an association and registry promoting the natural ability.

But what IS it with those loud checked coats? Sheesh!

Of course, that's coming from somebody who started showing so long ago that a plain black Melton coat, white stock, canary vest and buff breeches are the only thing to wear in a hunter class (unless of course you're a guy who's a member of the hunt, or hunt staff of either sex). It was really funny in the 70s, when everybody in hunter classes started wearing bright greens and blues and stuff . . . I looked like a crow in a gaggle of songbirds. Of course, since the object is to catch the judge's eye, that worked as well as anything . . .

I really think the rider's attire should not detract from the horse. The horse is the point, not the rider.

Don't apologize. I was being sarcastic. No PC crap here, missy. :~)

The horse is the point but rider and/or handler's clothes sure seems to play a part in the judges minds. :)

:) real sick of winter here - wind, rain and snow this morning. I am sure I must have slept through a pole shift a couple of months ago.

How are things with you?

I think the best one I ever saw was ol' Spec. Spectacular was his real name I think, and he lived up to it. He was a nondescript looking strawberry roan, but MAN could he fly. I don't remember when he was the Speed WGC but when they retired him, he did a victory lap at the Celebration that was AWSOME. I was glad I was there to see it. He actually ran out of all of his shoes. Kinda reminded me of the Roadrunner. His legs were moving so fast you almost couldn't see 'em and he'd lean into the turns like NASCAR racer at Daytona. One of my trail riding buddies has several horses off him that are really fast too, so he did pass it on. He died a few years ago and I sure hated to hear it coz he was a credit to his breed.

Going well. I'll be going home for two weeks at Christmas. Hope the weather will cooperate.

What part of Nevada are you in?

That's great. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you have good weather while you are home.

I'm in Northern Nevada - live about 25 miles east of Carson City and work in Carson City.

Just got an email from Country Supply - wormer on sale for $4.95 - this is a broad spectrum wormer, although not one I have ever used.

I've used this one before. I used to rotate it with a generic ivermectin and a febendazole like Safe Guard or Rotation 2. I quite rotating when the ivermectins got so much cheaper. They're all three chemically different and should complement each other. I need to go back on a rotation, and at this price I could.

I was wrong. Rotation 2 isn't a febendazole, it's a pyrantel pamoate like Strongid and that's what I used with the other two.

Hello:)

We had sunshine today. Yesterday it rained all day tho. Our ground is so saturated that we had to run the drain hose for the wash machine out a window:)

Forcasting sun the rest of the week. Our little Christmas parade will be Fri. night. Has this become a tradition everywhere now, to have a night parade for Christmas. REally stupid to my way of thinking. It's Dec.....colder at night. I've rode in Christmas parades during an afternoon, so much better. I'm planning on staying at my shop thru the parade tho, since it's right on the parade route. Think I'll offer a cup of free coffee to anyone who buys a shirt:)

I use to rotate with Anthelicide and SafeGuard till a vet told me they were about the same. I switched the Safe guard too Strongid. I've always thought Anthelcide gave the most noticeable change, even tho it is the cheapest. I've always thought it really shined them up and helped get the winter coat shed. Is that my imagination?

How many of you give a whole tube to their horses, vs. according to weight?

Becky
