The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Man, it's been a bad week and only Monday :'( I wonder what spooked him. He's probably got a major headache. Poor guy. Okie threw his head up and banged it hard on the top the second time I loaded him. No knots but it stunned him.

The TWH is the one my husband bought and it never worked for him because of his wackiness. The guy who bought him has him totally under control and he is working out well for him.
My horse , the Rocky, is the one who threw me in April. Since then he has been wonderful. I think he spooked at that time because I had that damn crop in my hand. I've ridden him every day since and we are quite a team now.

Yes I was at the sale. Which horse is the one you bought? What is her name? My barn owner bought a mare out of Twister and is going to train her and resell her. Interesting auction but I'm afraid to buy a horse at auction because you can't get a vet check prior to final purchase.

You obviously live around me. Do you trail ride?

She said that mare is a yearling... 366

She sure looks mature for a yearling, she's gonna be a pretty mare.

Your paints, are really sharp! I hope you are feeling ok, and get her problems worked out. When you are older, it's hard to take, those kind of falls. I know, I just don't jump on anything, like I used to do, in my younger days.

Oh, I'm gonna work her problem out all right. I'm armed for battle. Helmet, long sleeves, old lady hip padding, whip, and longe rope. Miss Sarah Lee getting tied up, and longed til her tongue hanging out. She's gotten a pass up until now due to her age. She's also grounded from the barn and her boyfiend until she can behave:')

She is a yearling, (foaled in July). Sorry to hear about your horses getting banged up. This filly has stitches above her right eye too. The dealer almost got run off the road by a semi, and had to swerve. He has a big rig, and the horses got thrown around a bit. So, she got banged up a little. At least she didn't lose it, like the pony.

Thanks,we like her. She does have some issues with her hind legs. A little touchy back there. She needs a good sacking out. I called the breeder last night, to find out about any innoculations, (she has not had any, just a worming program), and she told me that, she had the filly sent out for halter breaking. I conclude, that she had not had, much handling.

What's sacking out?

No, doesn't sound like it. Well, she's big for imprinting, but I am sure she'll come along nicely! No handling is a lot easier to fix than 'mis-handling'.

I think it was probably my mistake. I had put him in the trailer, then at the last minute decided to take Rocky, since I wasn't takeing Harley, and Jenny was going to be there.

Rocky usually goes in first then Rusty. I think since Rocky was with him and I unloaded Rocky first, Rusty got in a hurry to get out and started backing before I could unhook him. Of course it took me a few seconds to think what to do, I was way up in the corner of the trailer while he was doing his think and it was kind of hairy:). When I released the panic snap he just fell out of the trailer.

He looks fine this morning. I don't think the head bump was what was so sore. I think the check straps on the halter pulled tight on his jaws or something. He kept acting like something in his mouth was hurting. Turning his head sideise and chewing on the bit, but not really opening his mouth all the way, and slobbering.

I'll ride him this morning and see what he does. But he looks like his old self now. After I tied him up to the trailer, he stood very very quiet which is not like him. Something wasn't right. Hopefully it was just a temporary soreness.

Becky

Looks pretty good size for a yearling.

Rusty didn't break the skin, just scraped the hair off, but it was swelling pretty good last night. But it looks fine this morning.

I'm going to give him some bute again after he eats.

He'd probably be good to go tonight, but I'm not sure I am:) I really wanted to practice some before I went. I may load him up and run down there this morning....

Probably gave him a headache!

Glad it's just a minor one and doesn't need the vet out.
