Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Yeow girl, you may have a baby on the way!! How exciting! If you see her every day you probably should have noticed her in heat. It's really obvious in Winnie, she practically leaves a trail behind her and she's wantin' some action from my geldings, who have no idea what her problem is. Maybe you should have the vet out for labs. Get him to teach you how to draw blood. You can use the same vacuum tubes that you use on people.
Look at it as "saving" a buck. You don't need a vet or labs to worm horses, but of course vets don't want you to know that:) Worms can do major damage that can be permanent, if not taken care of, but now a days, it's easy to prevent without a vet. Prevention saves alot more then curing. JMO:)
Tuffy is right about others not taking care of it. Most of the people I know wait to worm till they see symptons of them, weight loss, dull coats, etc. But by that time the worms have done some damage sometime not permanent but they spend more feeding more trying to keep weight on then if they would just worm properly.
Becky
He sounds like a good vet.
Well I'll do some rotation first and then take her in if she doesn't get to looking better. If she's expecting, nothing I can do about that I guess. I asked the house vet about that though and he just said worm her. It's 85 dollars if he comes out which I would do in an ER but not just for routine stuff.
Wasn't she in season when she bucked you off?
Some mares are very quiet about it, especially if no studs around and if they just run with other mares. She could have slowed way down too, now that the days are shorter.
If you really think there is a chance I'd have her vet checked so you will know. I would doubt she would be tho if she came from a dude ranch. They usually don't let the mares run with a stud, if they even have one.
If it was just the bigger tummy, might be a possibility, but with the coarse coat and sunken flanks, I'd say worms. I'd worm her first with something differnt. If it's worms you should see a change in about 2 wks. If no change then have a vet check if you really think she could be in foal. Anyway that's what I would do.
Becky
I don't think she is. I asked the vet. He didn't do anything but look at her but didn't think so. I thought she was in heat caz she was so touchy but remember the owner checked her the next day and said she wasn't. Maybe she's quiet as you say. She came from a dude ranch that closed down. A horse seller bought them and the stable owner bought some of them from him. Whether she could have been exposed....
If I breed her it's not going to be until a year from Feb and only if I can have my own place before weaned.
Isn't it fun being able to discuss these things with lots of people on this forum? Chances are, somebody here has experience with whatever question you ask. I'm not good with breeding stuff since I'm never exposed to it but I'm getting to be an expert on Cushing's.
When Becky put all the pieces of the puzzle together, it does sound like worms.
Yeah. I have learned a whole lot here. Still scratching my head about this dressage stuff though:')
From everything I've learned, worms are one of the major causes of horses illness, because people just don't like spending that money when the horse looks OK. Took me some years to learn. All those wormers instructions say things like you only have to worm 4 times a year. But they fail to mention that that is under ideal circumstances, and very few horses are kept in ideal circustances. My horses being mostly dry lotted have to be wormed every month. I had mine checked every year and they were always clean, so the vet mentioned once I could cut back to every 2 months. I told him I dry lotted and he said keep doing what I was:)
Breeding.....it's hard for me to not sound hypocritical since I breed my mare, but it isn't something I would reccommend doing if horses are just a backyard hobby. Foals raised properly require ALOT of knowledge, work, they are expensive because they actually require as much or more feed then a full grown one, they always seem to get hurt, and you very seldom get what you want, most people have to send them to trainers to make them rideable.
I've learned the hard way. The foal I am expecting in the spring is the first one I feel confident about enough to raise all the way.
Becky
I guess is what I'm trying to say is if I knew then what I know now, I would never have bought a stud, or bred mares. But since we have Rocky, and I won't sell him, and I have a good mare that throws nice foals....
Becky
Fun to talk about though:')
Good morning! (Heh, I came home from the Beach house and took a nap, just woke up)
My picture place looks like it is working again. I'll put together a post on the horse show, with the pictures I was able to get ;~D
I'd check her teeth and worm her, and definately rotate wormers. Also, and this is directed to everyone - go to www.countrysupply.com and www.valleyvet.com both excellent places to order wormers, supplements and prescription meds (at Valley Vet) I generally buy wormer at about $3.50 a dose in bulk, it keeps just fine. I've ordered prescription meds from Valley Vet (you need to get the script from your vet) and they will keep it on file for you for refills.
I'm thinking there is a blood test to test for pregnancy, but not sure. You can give your own shots and draw blood, it saves a considerable amount of money, and it's something you should be comfortable with in case of an emergency.
Thanks for the links. I'm paying a little under 20$ for two tubes. This one might need to be sedated for a blood draw. She has to pee within a few minutes every time I get on her. I was thinking EPA:')My vet doesn't float. I have to use the house vet and he told me he treats by symptom not labs.
Are you familiar with imprinting foals? That's the one thing that we really stress and it makes such a difference all the way down the road. Everything from shots to farrier to manners - no fear, no fight, just okay, now what is it you are trying to tell me. Our three year olds kick up their heels a little with a saddle the first time, but have never yet had one buck a rider.
She's eating ok. I want to wait a few weeks to see if she picks up after a different worming. That way if she has to be sedated for floating and needs a blood draw it will be less traumatic for her to get them both done. If she acts like she did for her immuz. then there is a good chance of blowing a vein.
Boy, do you have any idea why she's so afraid of shots?
