The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It looks "easier" than the last saddle you showed me:') (the side saddle). I thought about just getting the band saw out!

A gorgeous horse. You guys are the ones I always envy, neat, well trained horses, clean, well fitting clothes. I'm usually out with levis and a flannel, arguing about whether we are going to go down the road or not. (with my horse that is)

Thank you! I just love this mare, she's a perfect lady and you can put anybody on her back (though maybe not in the hunting field, she does get a little excited there!)

Before we got her she was a broodmare until she came up empty on two successive breedings and was sold at age 14, unbroken. I started showing her 2 years later and hunting her after another year of work. She is soft as a chamois glove and a beautiful jumper.

I wish I had a good picture of her jumping! When we were coming up on a big coop somewhere out in the field, folks started passing the word back "Photographer!" It was a pretty good sized jump (about 3 feet), but I really wanted a good pic of Gracie jumping so we charged it and she put in a really big leap (and I even managed to stay in decent position with a pleasant smile on my face).

Naturally when I saw the photog's proof book a kid on a pony had cantered right in front of us, and all you could see was the top of my helmet and Gracie's ears!

Hey, we don't look like that ALL the time - just when we get all dressed up for hunting!

I need to post a pic of Gracie unclipped and muddy with me on her back in a pair of holey chaps and a ratty T-shirt . . .

That's always the way it goes, it seems. Whenever anyone takes a picture of me on a horse, the horse looks asleep and I look like a deer in headlights.

Is Gracie a T'bred? Well, you get there sometimes :) I can get the horses and tack clean for a show but even then, I'm running around with slobber on me or something. I don't show, so hand the horses at the gate and take care of getting registered, etc.

Gracie IS a T'bred. Her former owner was breeding her to a QH stallion and getting champion Appendix halter foals.

She really is a prettily conformed horse, a little dip in her back and a bit of "broodmare droop", but that doesn't show with a saddle on. When I put her in local (unrated) shows in hunter and hunter conformation, she always wins for me. She's a little old to go to a rated show, but she's such a good performer I think she could do in working hunter.

The solution to the "slobber problem" is zip-on ski pants and a windbreaker over your good stuff until you climb on board!

Yes, I can see champion halter foals. I'm not surprised she wins for you - a pretty horse on top of being built well.

She's a keeper! She's got a home with me forever, no matter what. She has given me six years of perfection, and I owe her big time.

My app mare that I had to have put down a couple of years ago (at age 28) was that. I didn't get her until she was almost 20 and every day that I rode her was a pleasure. It was also a wonderful learning experience. Somewhere in her distant past, she had been very well trained. She taught me not to ride with spurs if I intended to use them :) and finally learned to walk home when she decided I was more stubborn than her. On top of that, she gave me a wonderful filly that grew up with her gaits and personality.

She's a lucky horse. Is this the one who decided to rest too? I laughed when I read your post.

That's about the size and bulk of the appy mare that I rode a couple of weeks ago. (And I am only about 4'11"!) :-) She was a BIG girl. :-) Or maybe I'm just really small.... hmmm...

I don't know how this happened, but I had a friend that wore one of those close front bras, and she got it snagged on the horn and well... you get the idea. Hahaha :-)

I want an australian stock saddle. When I get another horse, I think I'm going to buy one to use on the trail. Not that I especially NEED it, but... I just really like them.
