The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah, I don't mean to take away from any breed or any style of riding.

I LOVED the few saddlebreds that I rode that were mostly natural and big movers. Awesome.

but, come on.

I also don't like the peanut rolling Western Pleasure horses of today either. I've seen more unnatural 4beat lopes in the western pleasure classes than any where else.

why do we always have to take it to the extreme.

"if a little is good, then a LOT must be better" .. and apparently it is, because the judges continue to reward it.

You do know I was kidding?

I spent several years in Tennessee .. home of the BIG LICK. I've seen lot's of those "things" ..

Hated them then, hate them now. (the "things" .. not the horses"

What breed do you have?

Western pleasure horses today look like their on their way to the grave, and maybe the riders too. If they could get the horse around the ring with no apparent motion at all, they would. ;~\

I'm glad to hear someone else call 'em "peanut rollers" besides gaited horse people.

I've got 1 walker (who paces, but I love him anyway) and 6 racking horses.

Gotta go to lunch...back in a while...

If you're interested in them, or will be interested, or have been interested, you are welcome!

In that case sign me up!

I used to train them but gave that up for the kids. Now I'm an equine artist...

I'll never forget the life I once lived though!

Beautiful! I used to fancy myself to draw and always tried to draw horses.

Do you draw from your imagination or do you do portraits of real horses? - or both?

Do you have a website we can look at of your work?

You know I have no imagination whatsoever? hehe. All of my portraits are from photographs. I do try to change a few things here and there so they aren't just copies.

Yeah though it's a little outdated. It's http://www.laurajsmith.com

Yep.... now, coming from Arab shows and English pleasure, I can take no real ownership of what's happened to stock horse western pleasure.

But the English Arab set have done the equal and opposite thing to Arabian English pleasure. There are a lot of horses that are a very pretty picture in motion, and that is why I always liked English Pleasure. They took the idea of big movement and RAN with it. The winners are all like "big lick" park horses now, movement has been exxagerated almost beyond recognition.

Yeah, even when I was around the Arab circuit, you couldn't compete in the Half-Arab English Pleasure classes unless the other half was a big lickin' saddlebred! (of course, you COULD compete, but why?)

The purebred English Pleasure horses were VERY specialized and that was their ONLY thing. And the licks were starting then.

I love your work, and the story behind it. I hope you continue, and I hope you find time to ride again too one day.

I pride myself on my ability to take great animal photographs, but there is an emotional or whimsical quality to sketches or paintings of them that make it art.

I'd love to do a portrait of Bay and I sometime, I wonder if you would be willing to lie about my current figure in the way a photo won't! :~D

Good morning everyone,
The exaggerated western pleasure gaits are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. The ApHC is now calling for natural forward gaits, just need it to trickle down to the judges.

Yeah - my stallion and I were showing about the time we stopped being able to win against the park horse.

He was pretty, but he wasn't a roaring tornado in the ring.

I heard that. And I heard that the AQHA judging was supposed to start penalizing for a headset so low the neck was below the horizontal.

I hope so, that will be the fastest way to retrain judges. Most ApHC and APHA judges are AQHA first and judge everything by their rules.
