The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

No not at all. Yesterday, my back just started hurting. Like muscle spasms. But it was fine after a short while.

I thought so:)

I always wanted one of those things when I was a kid, but never got one.

We had a friend whose daughter rode her stick horses so much they had to replace them often because she would wear the stick part to a point.

I've been moping around here for the last month(s) with not much to do except ride horses (which I'm not complaining about, but I need some diverstiy bad), and now, the next 3 days are packed full that for things to go right I'm going to have to run like a well oiled machine.

Why does everything come in big globs?

That's the way it always goes... and when there isn't anything to do, I can't get anything done. We're much more efficient when we are overloaded!

Yeah, I've noticed that too. And the days I have alot to do, I feel better come evening then I do on the days where I've not done much. You'd think that would be incentive to get up and do stuff. I've just been having trouble finding stuff to do.

I'm such a fickle person:)

The 'stuff to do' has to have an outside influence... Even cleaning stalls has more impact when I know ~someone~ will be coming over who might look in the barn. There is only so much incentive from jobs you think up yourself, that no one else will notice or care about ;~D

My horses must have needed some sunshine as bad as I did. They are all laid out flat right now in the sun. They look so comfortable:)

So, so true. That's one reason I like having company. I get th house cleaned up. If it's just Mack and I around alot of the fringe stuff doesn't get done, because what's the point:)

Well, of course as soon as I could get time to ride, it will probably be gray and cold here too. Hopefully it will still be nice on Sun. Next day I would have a chance to ride.

Kristy is going to come get Harley this evening tho, and take him to a barrel race. I'd like to go watch, but the transfers are suppose to be here today, so I'm planning on opening tomorrow morning, so I have to get shirts done tonight.

I glad he's going to get rode. Glad I rode Rusty yesterday. At least they are both getting a little ride time in.

The Fallon Horseman's Assoc has one play day show every year, no show clothes, etc. no points, just ribbons and/or pay backs. They have a stick horse class for all of the events, halter, pleasure, trail. The little kids just have a ball with the stick horses.

Saturday we are going to a local schooling show. ecurbh's never been to one. It'll be good because at schooling shows there are always lots of different types and levels of competitor. There will be body-clipped horses with saddles that cost more than my truck, showing along side the ole fuzzy backyard horse with a manure stain on his butt.

I just think these old time toys are so much better and make a child use thier imagination more. JP is probably a bit young for it, but by summer he should be able to be galloping around on it:) And of course we'll take him to the rodeo for the stick horse races.

That will be fun. I always liked the smaller schooling shows better. They are more about the perfomance of the horse rather then the clothes, tack, and big name trainer.

Speaking of little kids showing. I think I forgot to tell you all something my son told me about.

He gets a magazine from some ropers association he is in. He told me about an article about a "dummy roping" contest. It was in OK City, for kids 12 and under. The first place kid won.....$46,000.00. The top 25 were guaranteed $2000. I thought that was incredible. The contestants started out so far from the dummy and backed up a step after every throw. If you missed you were out. The winner roped the dummy from 19 ft.

Needless to say, Charlie has already bought a rope for JP:)

When Charlie was learning to rope the guy that taught him showed him the proper way to throw it, then sent him home and told him to come back when he could rope the dummy 100 times consecutively. I've never seen a kid work at something so earnestly as he did. He wore a bare spot in the ground behind the dummy. He roped every night, no matter how cold. He is really good now, and still enjoys roping his dummy.

He use to rope our feet when we walked across the yard. He was always asking me to jump up and down so he could practice roping that way. I quit doing it for him after a few trips:)

ROTFL! Only so many times I'd fall for that!

That's a huge award for kids.... wow!

That's what I thought. 19 ft is a hugh distance from the dummy too.
