Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
There is another mare in the pasture that looks amazingly like Sarah Lee. She also comes to me. The difference is she's 4 white and doesn't have the lightin bolt. She's very gentle and at the bottem of the pecking order.
I was just looking at a picture of Okie. 1, 4, 1/2 go figure lol.
I think the superstition originally was because white feet tend to have weaker hoofs than dark feet.
We are supposed to get down in the mid 40's tonight. Is that usually ok for them to be out? I was thinking about going out there but I hate to start turning on lights and waking people up if not necessary. It's not raining.
If they've been out, they can be out. They can take 40's. Horses that are acclimated can ~take~ most weather, they begin to suffer when it is both cold and wet, and stays that way.
Are you able to put them in in winter then on occassion and are you going to? Is it your call when to put them in?
I spoil mine. I like to, and I think Bay needs special care in his old age.
what ya trying to say ;~D
????
Yeah we talked and already decided to leave them out tonight. It's not raining. I just need to watch the weather earlier when these cold fronts roll in. It will back in the 60's thur. I can stall when I want. We stalled Okie two nights a couple of weeks ago. It was really muddy and we didn't want him loosing his other two shoes before the farriar could come out.
With our set up, all of our horses can get in or out of shelter as they wish. It's been 7' in the morning when I go to work so I shudder to think what it is in the middle of the night. My stud stays in, one of the geldings does, and one pregnant mare. Rest are out playing in the snow most of the time. They are used to coming and going as they please though, and are all pretty woolly right now.
I just went out to the car. It's not bad. The wind had died down and it's dry. I just need a really big garage when I get my own place:') (that's where I keep Cindy, my dog)
night, yall
Because of the extremes here I have a dog door into the laundry room and then a gate that closes it off from the rest of the house. Our two queenslands come and go as they please but generally sleep in the laundry room no matter what the weather. They just pop out two or three times a night to bark at coyotes. The min pin stays in the house.

I'm thinking of putting a dehumidifier in my tack room. It finally stopped raining yesterday. Hopefully, things will dry up before the next rain.
Morning. That might work:')
Good morning. I'm catching up on the old posts and I just have to chime in on this one. My husband despises horses! He hates the very ground that they walk on. It's a riot how much he hates them. He won't admit it but I think he had a bad accident as a kid. He was raised on a farm and used to show cows and pigs so I know he's not afraid of large animals, just horses.
I adore The Incredible Journey!! One of my all time favorite books. If you like to read kid books, have you read The Black Stallion? Even at age 43, the match race at the end still gives me chills.
You got that right.
