The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

So, how's the weather your way? We've had a few chilly days but holding in the 70's. I really miss the seasons.

I'm real excited....I just firmed up our reservations at a dude ranch out in Arizona for March. I have an ulterior motive of hoping my husband will get over his mistrust of horses. He bought one last yr. that was too high spirited for him. Has anyone ever been to a dude ranch?

Not yet:') It's hard, esp if trust isn't easy to begin with to have confidence in a horse after a bad experience. Let me know how it goes. My husband just groans because I want to go on a trail ride. He's ok with the riding but not the cook out, camp out, sing alongs etc :')

Becky, sorry for the slow response. The satellite that my internet connection goes through decided to leave orbit. Don't know how long 'till they contract for another one.

To answer your question, nothing happening. Must have been off by a month. That means, of course, that we'll have two in the maternity ward at the same time.

My farrier was suppose to come yesterday, but cancel till today. I think we will cancel again. The high is suppose to only be 39. I'm not riding much so it doesn't matter.

Well, nothing that spectacular here:') We did catch a rat last night though. I had seen that sucker and he looked like a Guinna pig. He wasn't quite that big but JJ wanted to take him to show and tell. I heard Eddie and my DIL telling him , that show & tell wasn't today. Does that mean if it was that they would have let him taken the critter? :')

Good morning, 30s, grey and rainy here... but we have a warm fire in wood stove, warms the whole house, takes the chill and dampness out of the house so wonderfully. Wish I could put a wood stove in the barn for the animals but I don't know if I could teach them how to put wood in there and keep it going and hay and fire do NOT mix of course. Cezar has hay in the barn to eat but he keeps going out in the light rain and drizzle to eat in the pasture instead. Maybe I will put a sign up and tell him, no eating in pasture when raining.

My Husband has no interest in horses either. Says he likes his horses under the hood (he's got an old Mustang). I think he had a bad experience with a runaway pony as a kid. I'm hoping that one of these days I can get a calm enough horse for him and maybe he'll go with me. Yeah, and pigs may fly too, but I still hold out hope. Good Luck and keep us posted on how it's going.

Horses are not in my husbands intrest either. When the kids were home he went to all their events with us, and we ran the local saddle club for years. He occasionaly rode, trail rides with the club, but was more intrested in the buying and selling of them, he is a born salesman:)

Now he pays all my bills for the horses, bless him:), and is very supportive of my habit.

He might have gotten more intrested if we weren't afraid of his getting hurt. Being self employed made him cautious.

Every horse we have ever had, with the exception of Rocky, seemed to like being out in the weather more then being in the barn. They have free choice to go in or out and most generally are out...even when they have and inch of snow on their backs. They will actually go in more during the summer months then winter, I think to get away from the flies.

Good morning,
Sunshine, 7' outside at 8:00 am when I came in to work. Our highs haven't gotten out of the 20's for the past three days :( Oh well, won't last long.

I am always glad to hear this over and over again, like a silly new first time mom, it does drive me crazy to see him out there even though he is fine, I don't know why, the dogs and goats are out grazing all day and I don't worry.

Hello! The weather is nice here, but it's chilly. Went into Providence today... which is the extent of my excitement for the week so far.

More excitment then is going on around here. I drug out a book I haven't read in years, sort of a childens book, but I always loved it. The Incredible Journey. Ever read it. I have yet to read the last chapter without bawling my eyes out:).

Isn't that the one where a cat and dog get lost on vacation or something and have to travel a long way to get back home or am I thinking about something else?
