Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
LOL...I get the same reaction from people when they see me feed the chickens an egg:)

He may have wanted it, if it isn't chewed up. But if he was going to have it tanned, he prolly wouldn't have left it out and vulnerable. Not very many guys tan deer, so prolly not.
But it may be risky for Grizzly to keep messin' with this guy!
My Logan got into a deer hide and got awfully plugged up with hair. He ended up at the vets getting a mondo enema they hooked up to a bath tub.
That was one of my first visits with my current horse vet, who I fell in love with him despite the stuff coming out of my dog. ;~D
Hmm. Grizzly had an arrow and now a deer skin? Sounds like he went hunting himself, in his own way lol. Do hunters keep the skin? I don't know. Maybe someone else here will. If valuable, I think I would just put it up awhile in case someone comes looking for it. Time to go. Talk to yall later.
Well then I guess I should take it away from him.
I've talked to these people several times. I explained to them about why we have Grizzly and why he is loose. I knew he went over there some. I told them if he was ever a problem to please let me know and I'd do something, lock him up. But they have told me several times they really like him, he plays with their dog and kids. I don't think he goes over there unless they are out. He always seems to be here.

I don't think that post makes a lot of sense...
need more coffee....
Well then, I need more too, because I understood it...or at least I thought I did:)
Becky
Good morning.
I wouldn't go shopping today for love nor money. I hate crowds.
Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving.
BTW, no foal yet. It could be that we are off a month. Maybe a Christmas baby?
I was having trouble with the last sentence... ;~D
It would make me crazy not knowing, are you going to have the vet out to predict?
Did you answer as to why you bred so late in the year? Or were these not planned?
And good morning!
I have 18 more questions, but I thought I'd back up and not be so rude! ;~D
Has she bagged up yet?
Becky
I didn't notice anything about your last sentence. Don't we all love are vets, inspite of the things that go on sometimes when they are around.
The vet that did that prepurchase sale on Harley was a vet me and a friend of mine use to "love" having to take a horse too. Of course now I'd like to knock his block off:)
Becky
Heh...
We're gonna have the vet out in January I think.... could do it this month but we've got Christmas money to spend too...
Nothing urgent, have Bay's teeth done and his sheath cleaned, check everyone over, and perhaps to some blood work or talk feeding programs if Cyn isn't gaining better.
An FYI:
I had a vet show me how to clean sheaths, and it's very easy if the horse is OK with being touched there:) So far I haven't found one that it was a problem with.
Get a big handful of furizon. And even if they won't let it down, put the furizon up inside and rub it all over as much as you can. In a short time all the dirt and loose skin will desolve and just run off/out. The next day you and hose or wash it off. Of course you have to catch it out sometime to "bean" them, but it's really not that bad to do, and saves some money.
Becky
Have you ever checked the fat content in your feed? Horses her age really don't need alot of protein but lots of fat to gain.
I found one, I think it was made by Acco, called Golden Endrance. I fed it to Rusty. Low protein but very high in fat. Wasn't that expensive either. I mixed it with the pellets I use. But even then it took awhile. Of course he was in alot worse shape then Cyn.
Becky
The Furizone is a good idea, he should be cleaned more often than once a year, and I'll try that.
My stallion dropped easy.... Bay runs so far up inside a dentist would have a better chance of reaching it than me. I've been in there up to my elbow and not found it. ;~D
He's shy. But he's easy to do when he is sedated for his teeth anyhow.
I was surprised how far up you can go:). But if you get that stuff as far as you can it will work it's way all over.
I got in a tug of war one time with Rocky:). He doesn't mind my putting the furizon on, but he doesn't drop easy. I've gotten with him when I catch him dropped I check quick for beans. But he's sucking it up as soon as I get hold.
And with that, I think I'll end this line of discussion:)
Becky
I think I'll go fix breakfast and come back when the subject changes. ;~)
LOL

Good morning Becky, this is Sharn, James better half! Mistys bag is getting fuller and she is pacing and looking uncomfortable. She is also nipping at her midsection.
As far as when we bred them, well we got the stallion (Lightning) and Misty at Christmas last year and Sugar , our other pregnant mare, not long after. Lightning jumped on both pretty quick and it wasnt long before the girls werent having any part of it!
We are new to horses, I am an English lass (been here nearly 4 years) and know about sheep but am new to horses. I am learning as much as I can in readiness. We have some very good friends who have been in this position many times and are being a lot of help.
How do I post photos onto this website?
Happy thanksgiving........
Sharn
