Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I can't believe the horse would allow it. Mine would take off like the devil was on their back.
I had a stray game hen take up residence at my barn too where I used to live. She was a tough old bird and very wiley. I had 5 or 6 cats and at feeding time, they would part like the Red Sea when they saw her coming. Every year she'd get broody and make herself a nest somewhere in the hay and start to lay. I got quite a few eggs out of her but there was always the day when you'd go out there there'd be feathers and busted eggs everywhere and you just KNEW her day had come. But she'd always show up later on. She'd be missing half the feathers off her neck and back but she'd lived to fight again another day. Something finally got her for good though when she built her nest outside under a bush. I found a feather trail half way across the yard and through the fence. I kinda hated to see the old girl go.
BTW we are going to the beach house tomorrow, yes...
That was the funniest thing I've read in ages. I have 4 miniature horses, 2 mares and 2 geldings but when I got the geldings, they were studs. I thought I could deal with them as studs but dang, they were humping everything they could get on! My donkey, the mares, dogs when they could catch them, and anything else that breathed. I finally called my vet and told him I couldn't take it anymore. Those little studs wouldn't even slow down to eat! They were always chasing something with lust in their eyes.
Well, if nothing else, she's a lovely pasture ornament.
LOL!! I remember someone here saying they had a stud that was humping a round hay bale. Now THAT took the prize!
Bob(the biter) is a stallion right now too, and he's ALWAYS jumping up on the other 2 gelding's backs. They don't appreciate it much either and he usually gets kicked off, but sometimes they'll run around with him up there hopping along behind them with this really funny look on their face like "What the HECK do you think you're DOING up there?! GET OFF!"
LOL! That reminds me of when our old Labrador broke out and headed down to the neighbor's every month when their Great Dane was in heat... We'd find him running around her, trying to hump whatever he could reach, usually her leg... she seemed willing enough, but she might as well have been ten feet tall, he couldn't reach her.
It was the saddest thing, draggin' the poor whimpering fool back home.
That she is... ;~D
And she's having fun with the new mare, too. The two mares play differently than Bay ever does, he likes to run, but the mares just sit and pick at each other... they do a lot more rearing kicking and rough-housing. I haven't been able to get pictures yet because they stop whenever I come out with the camera :~\
Hahahaha humping a round bale!! I'd pay to see that!
You need to take a short video and post it of Bob hopping behind a gelding. Too funny.
So many giggles this morning, my kids are going to come in here and ask me what I'm laughing about and I'm gonna have to make something up.
My husband uses that poor whimpering fool look from time to time.
The stallion and the round bale was Becky's Rocky ;~D
But it's all us wimmen doing all the snickering this morning! We aren't looking fair and balanced ;~D
The round bale humper was mine:).
It wasn't anything I'd want a picture of tho. It was rather embarassing:). I was glad you couldn't see him from the road.
Becky
Mack thinks all this is pretty funny:)

A friend of mine got a little tiny miniature that was still a stud. She had him gelded immediatly, but he was the funniest thing. He would get around full size horses and bow up and snort and act all studdy, but he didn't even come to their knees:). His name was Thunder.

~chuckling~
I think I can! I think I can!
LOL...I worried about the hay being rough on him...
Becky
Ya'll are killing me!! Glad I don't have a drink in my hand reading these posts.
Speaking of driving by something funny, a few years ago I was driving to a farm to look at a horse. I thought I was hallucinating when I looked to my right and saw 2 camels doing it. One was laying down and the other one was having his way. When I got to the farm I asked them if there were camels in the neighborhood. I was relieved when they said yes. Thought I'd been doing too many drugs.
Those little mini's are tough customers. If I put one of my little geldings with my big horses, they all stay out of his way. He's top dog among them.
Little guys like that are handy to have around for teasers so you know when your mare is ready to breed. I kinda wish I had one.
A long time ago I knew a guy at a barn where I used to board who had a teeny tiny little jack that he used for that. He'd stand out there for hours on his tippey toes behind a mare and his little front hooves wouldn't reach the top of her tail. Poor little bugger. But ONE DAY, she found a dirt pile and man oh man did we have to move fast or we would've had a little mule on the way coz he meant BUSINESS!
