The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

My husband and I lived in a mobile home when we first got married, many moons ago. Had a few scary moments. I was born and raised here in North Texas so we are really bad about not taking tornado watches seriously but when I hear tornado warning, I sit up and pay attention.

If they aren't treated well, she's in a heap of trouble. :)

Yeah before we moved up to the "big house" we lived in an old single wide. The weather was getting bad. My neighbor wanted me to come to her house but I passed. The wind blew the door open and my little boy and I had to use a chair to get it closed. I then started thinking maybe I ought to get out and was getting the two kiddos and I couldn't get the door open. It really does sound like a train. The walls were actually bowing in and out.

Dang girl, that was a close call! God just wasn't ready to take you and your kids that day.

Yeah. I've never felt comfortable in a mobile home during stormy weather since then.

Yeah I have lots of acorns. But Rusty was in the arena where there aren't any. I've heard they are toxic too in large amounts. I don't know if the horses are eating them when they are out in the pasture. I probably need to check...

On her withers it looks like rain rot, but that on her butt may just be her, since she looks like she has white in her tail. Do they get rain rot on their tail bones:)?

I really dunno! I am wondering if the white in her tail is likely to be natural or is all scarring.

She rubs her tail out in summer, it might also be scarring from that :~\

Well in that case it could all be natural maybe.

Great. Hope you have fun:)

Looks like tomorrow we will have rain again. Well, it really isn't "raining" just drizzled all day today, gray and damp.

Yeah, it could be that. Hard to say. Does her tail get scabby from the rubbing, or just the hair rubbed off? If she rubs it till it's scabby then I'd say that's it.

Looks like most of the rain not going to make it down here. We sure could use the drying out time

Since I've had her she hasn't gotten scabby, but she came with the habit and sensitivity. I fly spray her, but I am not sure what it is that makes her so itchy in summer. She rubs all over.

Speaking of tornados, are you watching "storm stories" on TWC? The girl wouldn't leave her horses:'(
