The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

LOL.

Well I haven't done much today. It's raining.

We are going to JP's 1st birthday party this evening.

I've actually been getting started on looking into possibly opening my own business in town. We bought a building this summer for leasing out, and Mack will let me have one of the smaller spaces.

I really need to do something. I don't think the horse thing is something I want to turn into a business. I want to keep it a hobby. But I need something. I've been pretty isolated here since the kids left home, and I'm finally getting to the point of being stir crazy, and already this winter I'm turning into such a couch potatoe.

What do you think you'd do in your business?

I went out at worked on my trench today, and a weird thing happened... Other than that, slow day.

Yesterday, there were numerous alerts about severe winds today 40-70 mph, which are severe winds here in tall tree country. Got me all worried about tall trees around my cardboard house. Today, it's calm, no mention of where the storm went. I hate that. They just pretend yesterday's forecast never happened.

Tomorrow, one of the troops the hobbit hole has been supporting is coming home, so we're going to go meet him at the airport we hope, if he's coming in commercial. If they put him on a military plane, we can't get on base to greet him. :~\

Evenin' all,

Anybody use a mecate? I've seen a few people use them and they sure are pretty.

Doesn't go with my English stuff, but ecurbh's Mustang-type horse would look purdy in Mecate reins :~D

I think the little tassel hanging down at the slobber strap is cuuuute.

I have tons of tack, english and western, but I don't have a mecate. I think I need one.

I use a mecate on my appendix..
I like it for trail riding, it functions as a safe tie up for lunch breaks and I like the feel of the rope..
It has a nice hand, and weight..

The horsehair ones are Ok..
They do require gloves, but I always wear them anyway..

After my lesson today I took a trail ride with Waylon and he was such a good boy.....crossed over large tree trunks and lots of other junk.....can't wait until I take him down to our cabin and ride the trails down there. I told my husband there had better be a fenced in pasture by May. We planted the pasture two yrs. ago for the deer (mostly clover) and it ought to be prime by then.

I didn't know you needed gloves with the horsehair ones. Do they rub your hands or are they just prickly? What is available besides horsehair? Anything softer that you recommend?

The horsehair is prickly and kind of rough.
Maybe it softens after 150,000 miles, but I've yet to see it. If authenticity is what your're looking for, then the "hair rope", would be it.

I use 1/2" boating line. (maybe 3/4"???? not sure. use what feels best for your hand size). It comes in lots of colors and the bridle-end finish frays out real nice. It's supple and gentle on the hands.

You need about 22 feet. 10 feet go to reins and the rest to the leadline.

I add a popper on the lead end.

I hope you get to meet your guy at the airport. I imagine he would enjoy it as much as you all would.

I saw your "hole" in the drainage ditch on the HH. Probably a mole, or some other kind of tunneling animal.

I'm thinking of putting in a retail T-Shirt store. We have a press to put transfers on them. We've sold them before at playdays etc. out of the back of the truck. But never persued it seriously. I'm looking for something that the girls can work with me, something they can take thier kids with them on occasion.

The name of the shop would be "$5 T-Shirt Factory", with the hope that a fairly good quality shirt with neat transfers kept at the $5 per shirt will bring people in. Then hopefully we can expand to more expensive shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, and custom stuff, etc.

The location of our building is in a good place as far as traffic, especially the kids in town. There is the Community Center just a few doors down one way, and a hamburger resturant with a game room the other side.

I ordered a horsehair mecate and slobber straps from National Ropers Supply. Should be home when I get there tonight.

And I believe that the 'little tassel' is called a 'shuefly.

Morning, Becky.

A mecate is just a rope that is tied off to the left side of the bit, looped over the neck and tied through the right side of the bit, with the remainder looped around the saddle horn. They usually come in lengths of about 22 feet.

The part between the bit is used for reins and the six or eight feet of tag end is used as a 'git down' rope or lead.

So they're reins?

How do you tie them to the bits with the tassel on one end and the leather at the other?
