Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Being around mostly trail riders now, I don't know anyone who wears a helmet. I understand that some people do, but it isn't the norm. I also understand that with AAM riding at a hunter/jumper barn, helmets are part of the tradition and part of the norm. What we are used to doing shapes our argument for what is the best way to live.
I'd never argue against them, I just don't think the type of riding I do leads to head injury, and I don't find hats comfortable. So, to make myself uncomfortable every day for a slight perceived risk isn't enough. Statistically, I think I am at most risk of head injury in my car, and I am not helmeted there. But I hesitate to argue mine is the right way to live either.... something about tempting fate.
I saw your post here on MY Comments page and laughed and said "The peacemaker cometh:)". How you do it so well.
Your post was very good. Thanks.
Becky
~smiles~
Thanks! I does whats I can!
We were up early but not here - we snuck out for big ole pancakes at the truck stop!
Sounds good:)
Heather is coming today. They predicted rain all day yesterday and it never happened. Today is our best chance to not have rain, and it does look like the sun is trying to come out.
No promises, but I will try to remember the camera:). But I won't be going over on those other trails, too far from home with the chances of rain we have.
Becky
Well, I'll hope for pictures of ~some~ kind.
Drizzly here, but still not enough rain to be able to be proud of my drainage trench. ;~\
She unofficially made me an offer. We'll see if it gets thru coperate. I'm not going to chase it though.
Well, I did give up smoking. Went to eating :') To me helments an individual choice and I understand how you feel because that's the way the one's that don't wear them around here act towards me. There are always advantages and disadvantages in everything. I got griped out the other day because, if I'm going to wear one I need to wear it right. (I tend to push it back without realizing I'm doing so at times).
Bummer, your morning has not started well has it? Okay, I'll still keep my fingers crossed for you that she comes up with an offer worth taking.
The good news is that after knowing her all these years I never knew she was raised around horses. She's gonna come out and go riding with me:')
I tried to wear a helmet on the ATV and couldn't stand it - I did honestly try though because I always insisted my son wear one. Fortunately, when I wrecked it, it was my foot and leg (and my levis) that were mangled. I quit riding ATV's and stick to my suzuki.
I do wear seat belts because a) I was in two accidents where I would have been hurt if not wearing one and b) here I'll get a ticket.
I smoke and do a slow burn everytime someone says, "that will kill you, you know" like if I quit, I'd live forever?
I don't get in other people's business like that and really resent them thinking they have the right to walk up to me on the street and start in.
I hate being told by government (or others) how I should take care of myself, so automatically dig my heels in. Plus, one of the great things about horse back riding to me has always been to total feeling of freedom and grace. HOWEVER, I am in a position where it would be prudent to take precautions. So, I will try one if I can find one I can live with.
As far as the vests go, [oh what wicked webs we weave, and so on]. I was looking at those on a pro rodeo site. There though, my husband would question it and if he knew the state of my back and neck, he'd throw a fit and then forbid me to ride or sell all the horses. I've only discussed it with my neighbor, which is why she doubts my sanity :) and my intelligence.
I don't have any problem with people wearing helmets, in fact think it's a prudent thing to do but I really hate to change. I meant in my comment on Christopher Reeves that he had taken all reasonable precautions and still was hurt seriously. You all have given me a lot to think about anyway.
Now, hope everyone has a good day.
Well, that is cool. At least you have gained someone to ride with.
Well I was supposed to ride at 3 but just got cancelled. The grounds wet.
LOL!! Sounds hilarious. I wish I could hear the music that goes with it.
What I understand from somebody who was there is (1) he was riding way above his ability level (2) he was riding way above his confidence level (3) he had his reins wrapped around his hands and so could not catch himself. He had trouble on only the third or fourth jump in.
I ride in the "baby" class cross country because I DON'T want to bite off more than my mare and I can chew.
Oddly enough, I had the same type wreck the very next day after Reeve (riding a borrowed horse who shut off at a fence). And his fate did pass through my mind as I sailed through the air, but I was able to grab the neck to slow myself down and I rolled when I hit.
I love min pins. :-) I had a doberman once. Sweetest dog in the world. :-)
yeah he's funny. The words don't do the song justice:')
The ground is a sloppy mess here too. When I went to go get a horse, I got challanged, I guess you could say, by the alpha appy. I guess you could call him the lead gelding, since he's certainly not a stud. Kept trying to get between me and my horse, then beating up on him when I tried to catch him. Finally poor old Banj. just high tailed it out of there, and I had to sneak him out of the back forty.
The geldings used to do that with Okie but they now get out of his way so I don't have to do anything. I used to throw mud at them. Sarah Lee on the bottom of the pecking order and the women would challenge me and try to kick her. Mud didn't do any good so I looped my lead rope and had to pop a few. Now they still come up but behind her but don't cut me off or get close enough to kick her. It helps that both horses come to us.
I sent you a post but it didn't show up so if you get two yeas! Congratulations, you deserve it. Me, I just need to canter/lope. It doesn't have to be smooth or pretty as long as I stay on the horse:') I said I would try this week so it looks like Thru. it is.
