Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I did keep my boots by the bed for a long time after that and pulled them on when I got up thru the night:) That's been years ago now. I guess the more/longer people live out here the more they have moved on.

Sat. I pulled my jacket out of my tack stuff. I had not worn it since last year. I turned it inside out and dusted for spiders and bugs but I forgot about the pockets. I stuck my hands in and ewww. I was expecting all kinds of critters I had disturbed. It was saw dust consistancy apple bar in the left and an alfalfa bite in the right.
Speaking of boots, I have this thing about shaking out my boots before I put them on. We have brown recluse and black widow spiders around here pretty bad and I've gotten pretty paranoid about them being in my shoes. A friend of my sister's got bitten by one on the butt when she put her clothes back on at the gym. It rotted out a grapefruit-sized hole before they finally got it cut out. It was a long time ago, but it still creeps me out. Any spider I see now is a dead spider!
(today is gross story day in case you haven't noticed) :o)
I know I'm a little late answering this one, but I'll put in my 2 cents worth.
I think Sevin will be o.k., but check with a vet to be sure. I use cattle ear tags made by Bayer to keep flies away, it might help with ticks as well. I think a product called Ropel might work, but again, check with a vet on that one. Chickens do work quite well.
To kill the ones on them already, any kind of oil, or even petroleum jelly will clog up the pores in their exoskeleton and kill them
Evenin', all.
CindyDawg, do you have trouble with ticks? I never see them on my dogs or cats. I use Frontline religiously, though.
My dad grew up in Scorpion country and still has that habit.
My dog is white and she's a tick magnet. I don't have any trouble with the horses though.
I was just following the helmet or hat thread. I think it should be an individual choice. I do but my husband or no one else around me does. Funny thing is that I feel pressured because I do instead of them because they don't.
Chickens will rid the area of ticks and the best are Bantam/Banty. Guinea fowl are an excellent choice too. My bantams loved mice and would gather around when I used the tractor front end loader to move a bale of hay. As the bale was lifted up, mice would fall out and try to scurry away. The Bantams almost always caught and ate them. The problem was that cats, coyotes, hawks, owls, dogs and snakes ate the bantams. My flocks were wiped out in no time.
I have been swamped today. The house was a wreck from the weekend and I have a ton of laundry.
I guess I've been really lucky with the tick thing. I haven't seen one in years.
I missed the helmet thread. I do think it's an individual choice, unless you are on someone elses property and they require them or you are under 18 years of age.
I don't usually wear a helmet but I make my kids wear them.
I've been following that thread too. It's an arguement here because the local horseman's association tries to require everyone wear them which we won't. The other two associations that we belong to only require them for under 18yrs in performance classes.
My objection, aside from they are hot and uncomfortable, is that unless I land on my head, they are useless. They don't do anything to protect me from injuries that are common to horse people, like broken arms or squarshed feet. And I didn't see how wearing a helmet would have helped someone in the middle of a cattle stampede situation. That said, I would require youth borders to wear them if riding on my property.
Well I don't know if mine has helped or hurt but for now I wear it. I'll give it up when I'm ready but the no helment crowd around here doesn't make it easy.
Where is this helmet thread?
I would require them for kids. Recently, in this area, a kid had a fatal accident because she wasn't wearing a helmet. She was wearing her new cowboy hat, got on her old, dead-broke horse and started waving the hat around. Scared the fire out of the horse and he took off. She didn't have the experience to know to drop the hat, she fell off and crashed her head into a fence post. She was an only child, I think around 10 years old. The horse belonged to her and her mother.
Helmets are like anything else that you aren't used to wearing. But once you get used to them, you don't really notice much difference. I've worn one for years, ever since my sister had a car accident and got a head injury. She had to wear one when she first started back riding and I wore one too, just so she wouldn't feel like she was different. But I've seen first hand how a head injury can change someone's life in the blink of an eye, so I figure it's a small price to pay. And as for them being hot, I actually think the opposite is true. They keep the sun from frying the top of your head. It's like having a insulator on your head, and mine is even black. I've never fallen on my head, but it's sure kept me from getting knocked silly by low hanging branches and one time even kept me from getting scalped (literally) by one with a bad snag on the underside. It peeled the hard plastic cover right off the styrofoam. Woulda been my scalp if I hadn't had the helmet on. Liked to have broke my neck as it was.
Hi Cav!
I didn't know chickens would eat mice! I knew they would eat almost anything that moved, but eating mice is a new one on me. Learn something new every day I guess. You've been working too much here lately, I haven't heard much from you. Whatcha been up to?
I don't think the government should require you to wear one though.
What is seven dust?
Oh no, I don't either. I didn't know they were trying to do that. But they've already done it with motorcycles and in some places bicycles, so it wouldn't surprise me a bit if they extended it to horses too. Big Brother's gettin' TOO big if you ask me.
It's Sevin Dust, a kind of pesticide. I usually end up with more of it on me than on anything else. But the same goes for sprays too. I'm just a klutz I guess.
Where is the helmet thread?
I pinged you to it
