Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I use to put so much poison down that it worried me letting the kids play in the yard. I also put seven dust in my carpet:). They are nasty little boogers, and very tough. They don't creep me out anymore, but I worry alot about the disesies they carry. The best thing for keeping them under control in small areas is chickens. But the kids have 40 acres between them, chickens work well around their yards, but not out in that much pasture. What's the use of pasture if you can't use it.
I would think someone somewhere would have some type of repellant. I've heard that sulphur blocks help, and garlic pills. ??? They're going to try that.
Becky
I might do that. We are constantly pulling them off of her. It surprises me about the horses too . It's been so warm though that I thought it might be the spray.
Can you buy them this time of year though?
Good morning,
You might have her try putting apple cider vinegar in the water troughs. I don't have a problem with ticks here but in NC, regularly kept vinegar in the water troughs for ticks and mosquitos. Might work, I don't know.
What a cutie - with a milk mustache :)
Lord, you didn't offend me. Hope you have a great day.
Happy Birthday!
When do you leave the land of hanging chads? :)
2J, thought you might enjoy this conversation. I just told Cindy to get chickens to get rid of ticks in a yard. 2J has chickens in town.
Chickens are the best cure for ticks in a yard. REally. Do you think Cindy would chase them?
I just came in from trying to rig my nesting boxes so Grizzly can't get into them:). He's become an egg thief. A few of my boxes were low enough for him to get into, and of course those are the ones the chickens use. They're really stupid animals, but you can get obsessed with them. Watching/waiting for eggs:). I was getting about 6 a day, till Grizzly discovered them. Hopefully I've got the problem solved. I've probably got about 20 hens. A big bunch of them should start laying in Dec. IF they start in the winter. Might be next spring before I really start getting alot, if I can keep the coyotes from getting them.
Becky
I have no clue...check with your feed stores. Do you have an Atwoods there. They carry them alot around here.
Becky
How much vingar to how much water?
Becky
Cindy. Maybe but her better chase days behind her I'm afraid. The two Texas twisters another story though:')
Funny about the egg hunts. When my youngest little he used to bring them in one at a time , still warm.
Friday about noon. ETA in them thar hills about midnight, which means I'll be up till 2 or 3. I do a midnight tour of my place and sit around with dogs and a couple of beers to wind down.
I travel up 95 to Jax then meander northwest up through Jawjah. Go through Waycross, Vidalia, Harlem and a bunch of other little towns. Hit SC just west of Augusta. Go through Abbeville, Anderson, Clemson, Seneca and then home.
I used to pour a jar in per water trough - okay, memory is not the greatest anymore but I'm thinking 60-100 gal. tanks and a quart of vinegar. I just bought whatever brand was cheapest.
I used it for two reasons. First, it seems to make the scent of the horse's skin unappealing to mosquitos, flys, ticks, etc. Second, someone had told me that it also helped with horses hauled on day trips, as they got used to the taste of the vinegar in the water and I could then just pour a little vinegar in the water where I hauled to to cover the taste of minerals or clorine or whatever that was different from home.
I had a lot of problems with ticks on my dogs in NC and wood ticks on me but never had problems with ticks on my horses.
I'll be wishing you a safe journey then come Friday. You take care.
Hi Becky!
I had a terrible problem with ticks this summer when I moved. I had never seen so many. The horses ears were getting so full that I was afraid they were going all the way to their brains. They REALLY didn't appreciate me digging them out either. But I found something that really works. It's a 10% Permethrin solution. You can mix it up a bunch of different ways, but I used it in a small gallon pump sprayer. It doesn't do much for flies, but it's hell on ticks and it lasts a really long time too. Here's a link where I order it from, but you can probably find it a buncha different places.

Yuck! I HATE possums too. I had to run one off the other night in my feed room. They come for the catfood. The nasty bugger climbed up in the rafters when I got after him. I didn't know they could climb that well! Anyway, I managed to knock him down with a piece of PVC pipe and he went back out the hole in the floor that he came in. Gross!
Another nasty thing about possums is that they carry EPM. A couple of friends of mine have had young horses die of it this past year. They weren't exactly sure that it was EPM since they didn't send a blood sample off, but it was either that or West Nile or Rabies. The symptoms are real similar in horses for all of those. I started vaccinating for all three after that.
I went to Walmarts at lunch and got some antibiotic cream, a new flea/tick collar, and some more shampoo and powder. I also bought some puppy lamb food. Have you tried it on your dogs ? I'm going to mix it with her regular feed. Cindy's hip muscles wasting away. I need to get her swimming somewhere but I haven't figured how to make it happen yet. I thought about hauling her to the beach and wading out and making her swim back but the last time I took her she climbed up my shoulder. She's happy and it seemed kinder to just let her be.
