The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Happy Birthday! Cold here in Chicagoland, kids waiting for snow each day to make snowmen. But these nice 50s sure have everyone out doing a LOT of Christmas shopping. The stores all around Chicago are PACKED!! Yippee - and already playing Christmas music of course. Kitties at door every morning meowing for warm milk.

Morning. How cute. I need to go Christmas shopping this week for my kids overseas. Usually I take care of gifts through out the year but I didn't do anything this year for some reason.

I talked to my farrier last night. He says I didn't miss my appointment. I guess we forgot to make a 6 wk appointment last time. He's coming Wed. if the weather permits it. The horses all have their shoes, but are looking pretty long, not bad, but time for a trim.

Good Morning
We have snow here already. I'm supposed to ride tomorrow. It's supposed to get up to 50 or at least in the high forties.

Snow...yuk:(

I really don't like winter. This summer the really hot weather got to me more, but I still prefer it to cold.

It's like 55 here. If I think I can get out on a horse today without getting caught in rain, I'm going to ride, even if I have to stay in the arena, close to home. I swear sitting home makes me more tired and achey then getting out and riding. I really felt bad last night from not doing anything.

Thanks! Riding is going ok. Tomorrow I'm forcing myself to work on my canter transitions. What I really want to do is go on a trail ride, but I don't think that's a safe idea because of the footing out on the trails. Because of all the wet leaves and ice and all, it could be dangerous.

This will sound like a pretty stupid question, but what is "transitions?"

I think it's body postition from one gait to another?

Question:

I just got a call from my DIL about problems with ticks on horses. She is really finding lots and lots of ticks on her horses. Anyone know something good to help? Can you seven dust a horse everyday?

Good morning everyone... Been having a quiet morning watching the news and waking up slowly. Rainy here, but not enough rain yet to fill my new drainage ditch... So I am actually hoping for more! ;~D

We aren't in tick country Becky.... I have only seen one tick in my lifetime here.

If you do find a tick repellent, it's important to make sure it's safe for use on horses. (Duh, I know) another thing that helps to remove them easier anyway, is to first swab the tick with alcohol (isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Because they breathe through their bellies, the alcohol will suffocate them. I really don't know what to do about an infestation... Never really had a problem with ticks on horses. Might want to keep an eye out for anemia if you say that she's finding lots of them. Might help to keep the horses away from wooded areas and long grass if that's possible.

A transition is the horse moving from one gait to the other. Upward transitions are going from the walk to trot or trot to canter or walk to canter. Downward transitions are going from a faster gait to a slower gait. (Such as a canter to a walk, or a trot to a walk.) I'm having huge problems with my upward canter transitions in any gait, from trot to canter or walk to canter. Can't get them smooth enough.

I haven't had problems with the horses.I have only found one on Okie. I'm still using the fly spray so I don't know if that helping. Poor Cindy, has to be dusted. We spray the yard but she still picks them up.

Wow 1 tick. I battled them for years till I got chickens. The problem for Kristy and Jenny tho, is they have 40 acres. No way to control them as far as keeping them cleaned up on the property like I was able too.

Kristy has had a problem with anemia one time with Rowdy. I never thought about the cause being the ticks, but I bet it was. I'll remind her, because she is telling me she is having trouble getting weight on they're young horse right now despite large amounts of feed. She is pretty sure the problem is the ticks, but didn't mention thinking of anemia.

Ticks here are terrible. My dogs and horses come up with them once in a while but I think it's because of the rides I take in the woods. I very seldom find them on me out in the yard. Before chickens you could go out without getting a few.

I know and have put seven dust on horses. But I'm not sure how often you can dust them with it?

Is the problem with you not being smooth, in the right postion or the horse not being smooth? and how to correct?

Even before we got chickens I didn't have too much trouble with them being on the horses, just on the dogs and us.

But I do know that Kristy and JEnny have terrible time with them being on the horses. We've stood and picked them off by the dozens before taking off on rides with them. It's terrible.

I'm surprised you don't have them so bad there. I thought the climate would be good for them. If you have trouble with them in your yard, get a couple of hens, I guarantee they are cheaper then sprays and dips and you get eggs too:). Hens wouldn't be a problem with the neighbors, they don't crow.

I'm thankful to not have that problem then. The one I saw and pulled off my dog creeped me out so much I would feel pretty daunted if they were everywhere outside. I'd be poisoning the whole place!
