The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Our forecast is showing rain today and tomorrow, but then, finally, back up in the sixties:)

Mornin'. Chilly and rainy here, still. Supposed to be just like this all week. Guess I'll be cleaning house and oiling tack for the next few days.

It's gray here but no rain so far.I looked at the radar, looks like your rain is heading this way.

Heather is suppose to come ride tomorrow. May have to cancel.

I'd kill for a covered area to ride. Even a little covered round pen would be better than nothing. We've looked into building a nice covered arena but we just can't afford it right now.

I don't ride, especially in an arena enought to warrent a cover on the arena. If I had one covered I'd want it heated:)

I have an acquaintance that put up one of the soft sided arena. They are no cheaper but makes more sense for around here.

Morning. I can't believe it's almost 9:30 I just got up. I'm supposed to be at church in 15 minutes. I think I'm going to be late.

I would think a covered area wouldn't be practical around here but as much as it rained this last year.....

I've had it with the weather channel. The last two times I've opened it up my computer has froze.

I think I would use a lighted, covered arena quite a bit. Half the time I get to ride it's raining, muddy or dark.

Bums me out.

Did you read the thread about the rapper dying? Some of the funniest lines in the history of FreeRepublic.

I saw the thread. The arena shut down more than opened this year it seems. I don't know if we were just having unusual weather or getting back to normal because I moved here in a drought.

O.k., I'm new at the horse thing. About all I know how to do is feed them, which is about all I get to do right now. I've ridden some when I was a kid, and now own three horses with two on the way. If and when I get through building the house / barn, etc., I'll get around to riding.

Well, for being new at it, you sure jumped in with both feet, starting out with five!

Welcome to the thread! Where are you, and what kind of horses/riding will you be doing, when you finally get around to riding?

I rode this most unusual horse yesterday in the arena that was completely different than any other horse I have rode. He had the smoothest trot. I have always had to work with getting into the horses rythmn but with him it was so natural. When we would turn though I would feel off balance when going straight again and I would have to lean to the right to feel centered even though the saddle in alignment and not slipping. I would stand up and sit back and we were ok again. Could it have been just the horse stance?.

I am in middle Georgia. I've got a QH/Arabian blend stud, a Morgan/QH mare, and a QH/Arabian mare. The mares are both about 15 yrs old. The stud is 6 and green broke. When I get around to spending a little time in the saddle, we like to trail ride. I have some horse training (as well as rider training) to do first.

Well, I hope you enjoy this thread as a place to chat about what you are up to, share questions and answers you have. And, we always love it if you share PICTURES! We come from all over, and have a lot of different opinions and approaches you can choose from! Some of us have had horses a long time, and more than a few just getting started.

This is my husband and myself, on our horses... Me on my 22 year old Arab gelding Bay, and ecurbh, my husband on his 7 year old half Arab/Mustang mare. He is a fairly new rider who hadn't been around horses till he met me, and we were married just this last summer.

Completing our 'herd' is our mischeivous hackney pony on the right there ;~D

Keeping a stud is a particular challenge when you are just getting started... are you going to keep him a stud or geld him?

I've been told that gelding him won't accomplish much at his age. He's pretty easy to handle, though. He is a real people friendly horse. Before we had him broke, he was basically a puppy dog.
