Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
LOL. I don't think it was coffee they were drinking:)
I go sometimes with a group of ladies that are all beer drinkers. Take it with them on the trails and drink the whole time. Of course that means lots of potty stops. The funniest thing I ever saw once was about 6 ladies all holding horses and beer cans, pants down, squatting. I never saw so many butts all in a circle facing each other:)

Well someone just asked me what I've been smoking. I'm getting rude private mail about a post I didn't make on a thread I wasn't on:') Is it still a full moon:')
Girl, you wouldn't believe some of the garbage I was attacked with yesterday. Why can't people disagree in a nice, civil way??
Who is sending you private mail?
I've been on alot of "organized" rides. Don't go much now because I've learned most of those people either don't ride much, and very few have trail manners. I hate getting in a group with people who think it's fun to get the horses all wired up. I like peaceful rides. But there always seems to be fool in a big group.
You should look into competitive trail riding in your area. I have always enjoyed those rides the best. Everyone is on their best behavior. You can ride by yourself or with others. The pace is fast enough to keep it from getting boring but slow enough to enjoy your ride.
I learned alot about the things I needed to work on too, to make me a better rider. That was one of the best parts of it. You get your score card so you know what the judges see that you may not even be aware of that you are doing. I like the competition but it's not to the degree that is cut throat.

What part of Texas do you live in?
You'd be in the same region I'm in for competitive trail riding.
Becky
Somebody else mentioned competitive trail. I'll have to look into that.
I had one girlfriend that I used to ride with up until recently. She worked so we didn't get to go very often but one of our trail rides was memorable. It was spring and a nice day. When we were't too far from the trailer it got dark and misty. Then it started thundering off in the distance, slowly getting closer. By the time we got to the trailer we were in a downpour. It was pure unadulterated heaven.
What a vision!
I joined TETRA (Texas Equistian Trail Riding Asscociation) a couple of months ago. You have some pretty active chapters in your area. I can link you to the asscociation if you aren't familar or are interested. There was a 3 day trail ride I wanted to go to in Mason last month but cancelled because of Sarah Lee. Stuff going on every month it seems.
Here's a link to the competitve trail riding group.

I'm near Denton, about 45 minutes or so from the Red River. Aren't you in Oklahoma?
Yes, I would like to read about that association. My problem is, I can only go on day trips and then, only on weekdays. I'm limited to monday thru friday, from 9 am to about 3 pm, while my kids are at school. That's why I try to find other stay at home mom's to ride with.
Somebody attacking you on private mail is out of line, whether you were on that thread or not. Can we report stuff like that to the admin?
Thank you, I'll check that out.
I think I've been to a ride in Denton. I can't remember the name of the place where it was held, but I recognize Denton. We got rained on the whole ride that weekend. It seemed that year everytime I went I got rained on.
I remember the first day it was cold too, and by the time I got in I was cold and tired. I tied up my horse, put her blanket on and went in the trailer to dry off and warm up a bit. I fell asleep. Woke up when the judge was checking my horse. Needless to say I lost a few points because I hadn't groomed all the mud off her yet. It was kind of funny. I heard the judge outside my trialer and came flying out still asleep. I had never intended on falling asleep. The judge laughed but still dinged me.

I bet it was the LBJ Grasslands in Decatur. Does that sound familiar?
Yeah, getting away hard. I like TETRA because I get material not only about trail rides but clinics and shows and stuff. I'm fortunate I can get away on weekends though. I would love to have my horses at home and be able to ride in the evenings like yall do.
That;s it:)

It just seems lately that people want everyone to go to jail and that kids should be able to do whatever the hell they want. Most confusing:')
I've also rode at Marshall Tx. It was a private ranch. I haven't been to Tx tho in several years. 6 hour trips are almost to far. I like staying in the 4 hour range. Coming home Sunday by myself after riding all weekend is hard for me. I've pretty much decided if I go that far again, I will probably not come home till Mon. I think that would be more considerate for the horse too. I always felt bad trailering them so far after they had worked so much. I know it was hard for me, so it must have been hard for the horse too.
