The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Save yourself the frustration of breaking heelers from chasing horses:). I've had 2. One left. The other finally got kicked good enough it killed her instantly about a year ago. She'd been kicked sooooo many times, but never stopped. The other one, still chases them too. Not so much now, but only because she is old, and arthritic.

The only thing I never tried that might work is a shock collar.

The best part of a dog is a herder----but can get them in a bit of trouble if they arent careful...

Hope the Dog keeps himself safe--a good one is hard to find!

He just ~looked~ bored. He never swam around... sat for hours on end on the bottom of the tank except at feeding time.

Now he's all agitated and active - sure - maybe a girlfriend would have been better, but at least he's got ~somethin'~ to live for. ;~D

I hope he gets over this too. He's only a year old, and I was just starting to really like him. He's been going with me trail riding (till he got hurt), and was really making a great trail dog. Mostly stayed right ahead of me, which is what I wanted him to do, to scare up the deer before I got to them,

It's really raining here, lightening, thunder, there was even a tornado around Norman area, earlier.

We went that route, and you are right, you can never get them to stop. Once the collar is off, they go right back to their old ways. He grabs my poor Lab's back legs all the time too.

Did you see the picture of mt. St Helens where the guy's lava lamp was picked up?

I just got back from church and the coolest thing happened. Cody my two y/o hates the nursery. We were going to the fellowship hall and as we walked by he slowed down and didn't take his eye off the door and moved over and then hurried past it. It's the same move I've seen from my horses:')

Aw, cute Kitty #8. I love that pic of the cat walking by the line of German Shepards, on your profile page.

What always surprised me about my 2 heelers is they never tried heeling a horse while I was riding. The one that died would get in the arena and get in the way, but she didn't heel them.

Now Grizzly is a differnt story:), I have to lock him up if I'm doing arena work.

You mean it's actually warm enough to get thunder and lightening? Nice. (except for the tornado. I've been through a tornado and I HATE them) It's an icebox here.

I have a lab/border collie cross. He likes to herd small animals and children... particularly my cat. He's not hyper, but he definitely has the brains of both breeds. And he goes insane over water. You can't keep away from it. He once tried to jump over a bridge into a river, and almost strangled himself. (We had him on a leash) He just leaped. We let him drop into the water, then fished him out at the end.

It was 82 here today. Depending on the current a lot of the times when Becky gets bad weather , we get what's left of it several days later. Reading her weather posts is as good , if not better forecast:') We have rain coming early week.

*gasp* 82??? It was easily in the high 30s to mid forties today, and it's dropped down to 29 right now. We're supposed to get snow on Sunday.
