The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads
. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts
look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in
. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics
land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news
. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Heh....
Not much usually.... but I gotta go to town! We decided last night that I really should go change my name. Been putting it off since June, and now all the sudden, today is the day and you want to play!
Have a great day there... What's up after Frampton?

How to test for Sand
I just did a sand test this am. You take an early morning manure sample after they eat and put it in a clear zip lock bag. Label each sample for each horse. Bring bag inside and run lukewarm water over the manure. CLOSE THE BAG and flip it over so the manure and the water runs to the top. Close off a "funnel" with your hand or a twistie and let the water run to the bottom (dont close it off so tight that the water cant run down or leave so loose that manure gets through.)
Hold it up to the light. You should see no sand, only grass, hay, green water and some grain(s). If there IS sand it will settle in the bottom like silt.
It's a good way to test to see if you need to go the mash or psyllium route. I use Safflower oil w/ Vitamin E and FastTrack probiotics each day at each feeding and so far no sand in my horses intestines even though they practically live in a sand pit. Hope this helps anyone interested in seeing whats really going on inside their horses intestings. A little disgusting but fascinating to see and very instructive.

Well, I'm running down the road
tryin' to loosen my load
I've got seven women on my mind,
Four that wanna own me,
Two that wanna stone me,
One says she's a friend of mineSee you later. ;~D
