The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I hope they show up!

I got the stalls all clean according to my lofty goal this morning. Today we are going to install a new hay rack outside so there is one for everybody. Took awhile to find out where we were going to be able to place three hay stations so everyone would get along. They've hashed it out now so that they can all be fed hay inside the lean to. Still feeding grain in the stalls, and probably always will. Once that's over, they can munch hay together without any big issues.

Good to hear from you. Sounds like you have been as busy as we have.

I'm looking forward to my ride today. This will be the first time I have rode with these ladies. DeAnn is the lady I ran into out here one time. We've been trying to get together, she doesn't know alot of the trails around here.

We did do all the digging with them curiously looking on and interfering! They especially like to watch fencing projects... Spellbound by the fence gods. ;~D

Oh, I feel pretty certain they will show up. She called and said they were. I'm in no hurry this morning. It is warming up nicely. Lots of sun.

I'm hoping tho, that they aren't thinking an hour ride:). Where I'm taking them is at least 2 hours. We can make it longer if they want. The times she has come and parked here she has only stayed out for an hour or less. Can't imagine trailering and saddling for that short of time. She said one of the ladies she is bringing is going to ride her "old schooling horse" Hope it's not a beginner. But I think I may not even ask how long they are planning, just take them:)...is that mean?

I remember when we had Arabs, they always seemed more curious then Quarters do, altho Rusty has to be in on everything if something is going on that he can get into. When we were replacing the gate post this summer he kept coming up behind Mack and sniffing his back while he was digging the hole:). The thing you have to watch with him is he has nipped before. Made Mack nervous:)

I locked them all up yesterday when I was fixing the wire out back. I didn't want them getting into the old wire I was taking down. Rusty would have, and Rocky would have crossed over where I didn't want him.

Sometimes it is easier to get forgiveness than it is to get permission! As long as the ride isn't real hard or rough trail, anyone can handle two hours riding.

That's what I was thinking. I wasn't going to make it hard, my horse isn't in the best of shape.

Well they just pulled up

Don't forget the camera!

And get them to take some of you, too!

Yeah I like Home Deopt too. We have been in the process of remodeling our master bathroom for months. We ran out of money when building our house and some areas were just livable. A toilet, cheap sink and shower:') It's going to be really nice when we are through. My husband and I just so busy and have so many projects going on that we work a little here and a little there instead of completing one thing at a time sometimes. I have a house full now though and sharing one bath getting old so we are speeding up:')

I loved that movie. Okie isn't a mustang but the horse reminded me so much of him, esp expressions.

LOL....I forgot the camera. Had it in my pack too, but forgot the pack.

Heather will be here tomorrow if it doesn't rain and we will go back to those trails. Hopefully I'll remember tomorrow.

We rode about 3 hours. It was really fun.

I can't believe you could forget the camera!

Glad you had a good ride.

ecurbh broke our fence and then tried to fix it before I would notice. That was very cute. It was a section of old tape he shredded when he tried to throw a branch over and snagged it. That tape is real good for being visible, but it really turns brittle when it is old and breaks easy. I think it lasts no more than two years.

I know, I can't believe I forgot it. Tomorrow:)

Interesting about the tape. I've been thinking I would use that when I replace the front here this winter. More for looks than anything.

The ride was fun. One of the ladies that came had her son with her who homeschools. He did good, but I think was getting bored by the end. We didn't do much more then walk, DeAnn's horse was a beginner, only his third ride, so she didn't want to move too fast. On the way home the kid got in front and did some trotting, then went in the arena when we got back. I think he was wanting to lope some, but his horse didn't seem to interested in doing that:)

You all by any chance keeping up with the Scott Peterson trial on court TV. Sounds like some fireworks are going off among the jurors.

That's what I really liked about homeschooling. I could teach anywhere. Some days Josh and I would have classes at the beach or the zoo or where ever.

I enjoyed it because you had time to do things like ride together. I was very structured about school time, started at 8, TV's off, sat at their table, 45 minutes of work 15 minute breaks. But they always did finish around 11:00 which gave us plenty of time to do fun stuff together, and work:).

Sounds like the kid's horse is a good ole babysitter horse. Bay is real reluctant to trot and probably wouldn't lope with a little one on board. The littler the kid, the slower he walks.

I haven't been ~really~ watching it, any more than I've been exposed to trying to watch the news... I do love trial stuff, it is ecurbh who turns off the TV whenever Peterson trial stuff starts ;~D

I've got it on to watch now but they are discussing other stuff.... is there more to it than the possibility of deadlock that came out yesterday?

I like the tape, just don't expect it to last forever, you'll have to replace it every couple years.
