The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good morning.

I've been told that by a man around here that runs a horse ranch, and ropes that he leaves his horses studs till they are three because a stallion will develop more in his front end, and then gelds them because geldins develop more in their hindquarters. I don't know if I agree with that. Rocky has a nice hip, but he does seem heavier in his shoulders, and of course neck.

Hair, Cyn will probably pick up after a while. It seems to me that when horses get down, it takes awhile to see a change on the outside. Rusty was really thin when I got him, he picked up some but then seemed to stop. I think the insides need to catch up first. It was almost a year before I saw big changes on the outside. I think he is moderately a hard keeper. Loses easy. He looked like he dropped some while he was not eating those few days. More then I would have thought he would.

I'm planning on getting back in the swing today with my horses. If nothing else comes up that throws me off I plan on riding Mon. thru Thurs. and Sat. I'll alternate Rusty and Harley, and they'll both get rode on Wed's. because Heather will be here. That way they will both get rode 3 X's a week. Of course the weather could be a factor now, but this week is looking pretty good.

Becky

Sorry about the delay is response.
Rimadyl is carprofen, Motrin is ibuprofen. They are similar drugs, but not the same.

...and now that I've caught up on the posts, I realize that that question's been answered a few times over. Oops!

Morning. I just woke up. I need to get dressed and get out of here. Eddie always wakes me up before he leaves. Maybe he tried. Anyway,I want to see Sarah Lee off.

Morning Becky!

Glad someone is gonna ride.... Maybe we will, I don't know. The forecast keeps saying rain, but they keep pushing it off a day, and today looks dry so far.

Is Rusty still back to eating then?

The thing I have noticed about Cyn is that she is a slow picky eater, always have to wait and wait for her to finish her grain so we can put her out. And you said Rusty picks too.

That sounds like a bit of fuzzy logic to me. One would think that he would then loose the development in his shoulders...plus I thought that it was if you gelded them before a certain age that they would "look" like geldings (and act like them too) rather than stallions. Bizzare.

Rusty has been eating everything since we were gone. And, yes he is a very picky eater. He wouldn't eat bran mashes, even tho everyone said all horses love it. When he is eating good he eats as fast as the others, it's just that until he was on the anitibiotics last summer and then this time, he didn't eat up his grain all at once, it wasn't that he picked at it, he just didn't eat it all up as soon as I gave it.. He would finish it, but it took him the whole time between feedings. He'd eat a while then wonder off for a while then go back. When he is out to graze he always seems more interested in finding things to play with rather then graze.

Well, I'm not sure I agree either. But if you leave them studs and they develop the jaws and neck of a stud, do they lose it then if you geld them?

They never lose those cheeks. And horses that have developed a cresty neck won't lose that either, unless from starvation.

This is a gelding that used to belong to my friend Bob... he was a stud into maturity and then gelded. Had a great face, and still had something of a cresty neck.

That guy's horses probably develop at both ends nicely regardless... he just thinks he had something to do with it ;~D

That's kind of what I think:) I think a horse that is fed properly will develop what ever.

Rusty's saddled and standing for a while. I will probably ride him for hour, hour and half. I don't want to overdue in case that was what started his problem, altho I don't think I overdid then either. That's the only part about him I don't like. I've got to worry about so many things to be careful about, because I'm not sure what his problem is. LOL...probably wasn't anything more serious then the weather change.

Actually an hour, hour and a half is probably all I'm going to be able to handle:). I really can't remember the last time I rode. I think it's been 2 wks....
