The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Not sure. I was just trying to learn. I got the impression that he wasn't always in the mood. She said it was like he cycled. Maybe hormone flucuation or something I guess.

Sarah Lee leaves in the morning. I'm kind of sad. She's been so good lately.

He's going to work on desensatizing her from spooking about things behind her. She'll be there a minimum of two weeks. He said he's going to run dogs all around her. He's going to check her out for other problems I might encounter. She'll work at his ranch and then be tested by the river. He told me she will be bomb proof after working there. Lot's of wildlife and boogies . When he's satisfied with her I go to his place and ride her. He will show me any techniques I need to know that he used with her. If I'm satisfied with his work, then he will accept his fee.

Sounds real good! How much is he? Curious about such things if I ever need to send one off myself.

He's supposed to be the best around here and working her in.

He's 450 a month but breaks it down weekly. That includes room and board:') The stable owner prorating while she's gone so that will help out some. Still a lot of money. After checking her out he thinks he might have her back in 2 weeks or I should say 14 days of training. If it rains or he doesn't work her some days they don't count.

I'm glad I already made the commitment though because I could easily talk myself out of this and just "work" with her myself. It's a lot of money and I hate to see her go.

That's pretty reasonable.... very reasonable if you break it down by the hour and figure feed.

I hope it turns out to be a real good thing for her. I think it helps a lot that she's been good lately, but afterwards, you should be able to build some confidence and trust without always expecting her to blow. I hope and pray that she can become more predictable and safe for you.

Yeah me too. I guess I'm back to Buttercup for awhile if I can't get Eddie off Okie:')

You know... those Buttercups are worth their weight in gold. I love 'em.

I am sure glad ecurbh's mare turned out to be so nice. That was a really impulsive purchase that wasn't anything like the horse I had in mind. But she's a gem. Strange horse... She's so spook proof you can't beat her out of the way with a broom, but just great for him without looking or moving like an old plug.

I wish she'd gain weight though.... I haven't noticed a lot of change since she arrived and we are feeding her well. I thought things just naturally got fat when they spent time around me. If she turns out to be a hard keeper it will be her only fault... that she eats enough for two.

Yeah, early on I tried to trade for her but I have free access to her but she's not for sale. Sarah Lee has really put on weight and filled out despite cutting her back. I was a little concerned because she's a weak next to the last in the pecking order but I guess she gets what she needs.

I don't remember how old she is. Some horses don't stop growing and start filling out until they are about five.

She's seven... I'd think she should be physically mature.

We'll be having the vet out sometime this winter to give everyone a once-over.... I am keeping her in mind when I consider ~when~ to make that appointment. We never did do a vet check. We did worm her once and maybe will do again this month, even though we can typically skip a cycle in winter.

I think she seems real healthy. She is not overgrowing a winter coat, Bay and the pony are starting to look winter shaggy and she's still shiny and her energy level seems good... better than when she arrived. She is starting to really enjoy playing and rough-housing with the pony, and when she arrived she didn't do that.

She's on two one pound coffee cans of 14% complete feed morning and night, plus all the grass hay she wants. I never feed Bay more than a can and a half, and he's too fat.

I don't want to feed her any more, because she shouldn't need it.

She looks really healthy in her pictures. Maybe she never will get heavier - might just have enough energy to burn it off. She is a beauty. :)

Well, if she can eat whatever she wants and still stay thin, I'll surely end up resenting her ;~D

She looks good though, to me. She'll probably put some weight on this winter.
