The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Borium grips on pretty much EVERYTHING coz it's so rough. Some of the towns up in Tennessee where there are Amish communities close by are considering levying a road tax on them because their buggy horses all have it on their shoes and it really tears up the roads. You can order them already done from some catalogs. I've gotten them from Bedford Tack out of Shelbyville, TN before. They don't have an online catalog yet, just a mailed one. I ordered the rods from them and my FIL put it on the shoes for me.

I was plenty sore when my gelding fell in the parking lot because his hind feet slid out from under him first and he slid down on his butt, then he fell over on his left side on my leg. I hit my left wrist pretty hard trying to catch myself. I got out from under him when he tried to get up the first time, but he couldn't get his front feet up under him. They kept slipping backwards and he'd go back down on his knees. It was pretty scary. I thought he was going to kill himself before he finally got to some less slippery pavement and got up. Luckily enough, he didn't skin his knees up at all because the pavement was so smooth, but I'm sure they were pretty bruised up. I led him around for a while and he didn't seem to limp so we went on with the parade.

What did you do to keep it from happening again?

I hope all the puppies are ok. Do you use "pop" shots (occytocin) to get your puppies out if the delivery takes too long? My sister has raised Irish Setters for years and has had to use it in the past.

I stayed off of that kind of pavement. Regular street pavement was ok, but this was a church parking lot where they were staging some of the floats and they had put that tar-like sealer on it and I didn't notice it until we had already stepped out onto it. It was like GLASS! There was the slightest little slope to it and that was all it took. We went down like a ton of bricks, and in front of a whole bunch of little kids on floats. I think it scared them too.

My horse was sure footed and I thought Frog's horse was too ...

Too late, it wasn't. Kinda glad that she was not carrying a riding crop. My ears still burn every now and then....

Good morning! I was catching up on the posts and this one stopped me. There is something about zoo employees that makes them think they are better than everyone else. I was at the Fort Worth Zoo with my son who was on a field trip. We got to the zoo before it opened, my son and I went up to the front gate to ask how I could get ahold of my nephew, who worked in the corporate office. Before I could get a word out, he says "we're not open, yet." I said, "I know that, I want to see how I can get in touch with my nephew, who works in the office." His reply? "The office is way over on the other side of the park." I said, "I know that, I was wondering if there was anyone around here who could call him and let him know I'm here." He finally points me to the guest service office and I was able to find someone who knew my nephew, who was thrilled to hear from me and my son and brought us some freebies. The guy at the gate was a total jerk.

That is a scary accident. I never thought a parking lot would be that slippery but I'll sure remember it now.

It's in the low 60's and 100% chance of rain today. I was going to vote this morning on my way to work, but they were not open yet, and there was a line of about 20-25 people. I will go later.

Someone stole my Bush/Cheney sign on Friday night. I didn't notice until Saturday morning on my way out. I was out of town this weekend, and didn't report it until yesterday. The policeman said they had signs there if I wanted one. I did pick up one yesterday and stuck it outside this morning.

Hey! Hey! Don't be knockin' on my horse. He isn't clumsy, he just has a really big overstride. And yeah, if I'd had a crop you'da been in trouble! ;o)

It's good to hear from you. Been wondering what happened to you here lately.

I had to stand in line for about 30 minutes this morning, and I got there at 7am, just as they were opening. They were taking a really long time to get their act together at first, but after a while things started moving along more smoothly. It's supposed to be pouring down rain here by this afternoon too, and there's been some sigh stealing going on, but it's Kerry/Edwards signs that are going missing. I don't know why people want to do that. It just makes everyone look bad.

Sorry...SIGN stealing, not SIGH stealing. Although there may be some of that going on too.

Good morning.
45 minutes to vote - I got to the polling station at 7am with a line already formed 1/2 way across the parking lot. Really great to see the turnout. We have the new touch screens here. One wouldn't come on line and the one I used needed to be recalibrated. The right side of the screen had problems. All in all though, not bad and got a chance to visit with people I don't see often. Just very cold :)

Boy! Touch screens would be nice. We just have paper ballots where you connect the ends of the arrows next to the name of the person you're voting for, then feed the whole thing into a little machine that scans it and counts it somehow. We had the opposite problem with the temperature. It was 75 degrees here at 7am and very muggy. No A/C in the building either. Everybody looked a little wilted by the time they were done.

The people at the polling station were telling me that Nevada leads the nation in easy, tamper proof voting machines. I don't know if that's true or not.

Someone was telling me yesterday that our state government went to the casinos for imput on design of these machines. It appears impossible to vote for someone in error, there are multiple checks, and a paper record is printed when the vote is complete that stays in the machine. You can view it through a screen and confirm it.
