Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
LOL. You told me once that when you get sick and tired of...you are getting better.
I did huh? Was I right? ;~D
I know a woman who used to buy horses from the auction, rehab them and resale them. She said drugging is commonplace.
As always:')
My pony was a drugged auction purchase. the next day she was a different pony, unbroke and terrified.
Auctions are far too depressing for me to attend now. I can't handle the old, broken and thrownaway meat horses, they haunt me.
I don't believe it ;~D
WEll one down, one to go.
I guess I haven't ridden too many different types. Quarters, Arabs, a Paso Fino, grade, throughbreds....of course I prefer the Quarters:). Versatile and more level headed IMO.
As far as trail manners, I haven't found any breed group of riders that don't have at least some rude people. Everyone thinks their own horses are the best and want to show off. I've let my self get spoiled avoiding the "organized" pleasure group rides and sticking with the competitive rides, just for that reason. At a competitive ride everyone is on their best behavior:). I really need, tho, to get my horses in some of the bigger organized ride just to give them the experience of dealing with rudeness on the trail.

I had a lesson today. Sarah Lee got her first spanking but afterwards she did wonderful until I was leading her back to the pasture. We came out of the barn, two dogs several feet away walked behind her minding their own business. She did something with her back legs. She didn't really pull the lead rope or high kick but kind of jumped and stomped down. She made more ground noise than anything else. I turned her around to look at the dogs and she acted bored. Go figure.
The vet today?
What was the spanking for?
Becky
Yeah. It was a very nice service, graveside. About 250 people there. I went with Kristy. Doc, and his wife Carol always liked Kristy alot. We've laughed about how they took to her from the first time I took her with me down there.
Anyway Kristy's truck was blocked in so we decided to stand in the line to talk to Carol. She seemed to be doing great, even saw her laughing once, then when Kristy got to her, she cried. We did find out tho, that she does have another son. I was glad, I thought she had no one else.

She was being difficult about her back legs and wouldn't raise them on command. When I picked the right one up she pulled it out of my hand after a few "yes you are, no I"m not"'s. I went back to her leg and she nudged me over about two feet with her hip so I popped her hard on the shoulder and even though she didn't raise it but stood there and let me clean her feet.
If it's not one thing it's another.
I think Rusty is having a mild colic.
He hasn't ate today, except for just a little bit. and is standing around looking funny. Been keeping my eye on him since I've got home. No clue why. Maybe change in weather, maybe riding him two days in a row....who knows.
At least he is not down and rolling.
Becky
Oh dear. Another long night.
Jeepers. I hope he doesn't colic tonight.
Well, that's the truth!
LOL...he may be on his own tonight. I'm tired, and have to get out of here early in the morning.
Becky
It seems like they always get sick at dark, doesn't it?
Yep, or on Sunday...
Well, I think that is what is going on, I just hope it clears up and doesn't get worse. I'm just sick of trying to figure out what is wrong with this horse. Nothing has changed, he is wormed regular, sigh. If it gets worse tonight, I'm pretty sure he will be for sale, and I'll keep Harley. Of course, finding a buyer for a horse with problems.....I don't want to send him to killers, but I can't keep doing this.
