Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I love trucks. Big trucks that you ride high in and see around you. Big horse trailer pullin' trucks. :-) So are you test driving this new truck, or borrowing it?
LOL! This one is your kind of truck then.
I will just get to borrow it every now and then. : )
Good morning

Heather coming today. We will ride a while then take Belle to the vet:)

You see signs or is it too soon?
I would love to teach something fun like that to my pony.
I toyed a little with teaching her to bow, because she is so naturally flexible she does similar stretches on her own. Didn't stick with it though... yet.
Oh good! Today we learn if we are expecting a baby on the thread!
To tell the truth, I haven't seen her since I took her back to pasture. The girls have not seen any sign of her coming back into season tho. Horses don't really show much till later into it. She'd only be about 4 months now. They are pregnant for 11 1/2 months.

The little mini horse, we rescued this spring is not doing very well. She was foundered. We have the farrier come about every four weeks, to work on her, but she has a hard time walking. She is aged, and my daughter was wondering if we should put her down. I told her to try some bute, and see if that helps, the poor little thing.
The people we got her from, had her tied on cement, and her feet were in terrible shape. I just hate to see her suffer.
Glad the pony doing good. Sad about the mini horse.
Thanks, we will do our best for her.
Good Morning.
My cat can do tricks! She likes her tummy rubbed. She will lay on her back and knead biscuits.
They're cute when they do that!
My cat likes to play handball (pawball??) in the showertub with a whiffle golf ball. You can drop it in there and he'll proceed to go crazy swatting it off the walls. When it finally goes flying outta there, he'll go get it and drop it in somebody's shoe. It kinda freaks you out sometimes to put your foot in a shoe and there's already something in there!
Back from the vet, my mare IS in foal:) everything looks good. I'll bring her home in Feb. for the last 3 months.
It was a very interesting visit. This vet said there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with Harley. He would make a fine jumping horse, and no vet should try seeing into the future. He said, navicular, which is what the other vet probably thought would eventually be the problem, is not caused from upright pasterns but from lack of conditioning for the very stressful stuff we ask our horses to do. He said if everyone rode their horses like I do there would be a lot less problems:) He also said he won't do pre purchase vet exams because people that have them done ARE looking for guarantees that nothing will ever go wrong. He has a very good friend right now who did one for some people, and is now being sued for $100,000 because a year after the horse was bought it has come up lame. People are so stupid.
Anyway, we also got to see him remove a bone chip from the shoulder of another horse, yuk:(. This horse has been winning money running barrels, and is pretty young, but he said she was done. Too much damage to the shoulder joint, won't be good now for much else then a brood mare. The lady was in shock. Was not expecting that bad of news.

So you think that other vet used the word Navicular and not "Founder" and the guy remembered it wrong?
Glad to hear she's expecting! That will be fun!
No, I think he used the word founder, but he also said that in his opinion the horse stood to straight. He never said why that would be a problem that I heard, but my vet said he was probably THINKING navicular. My vet said that use to be what some vets thought might have been a cause of it.

I think of ~ringbone~ when I see really upright pasterns... In addition to jarring trots ;~D
But as for anecdotal notes about pasterns and Navicular, Bay doesn't have upright pasterns, quite the opposite, I think they are too long and sloping to be ideally strong. But they held him up under heavy work into his 20's so it's all relative.
Wish you two were closer, you could keep my team to pull a sleigh during the winter months.
I dunno, it might be appropiate in some circumstances..... : )
