Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Oh, hi Becky! Can I make a suggestion for an anniversary gift? :o)

Taking a break. Whew! Deep cleaning the kitchen. I have way too much stuff. I don't think this family ever throws anything away.
Seriously, Sorry things didn't work out for you. I hope you are happier and at peace now.
Call me crazy, and I'm not knocking anybody who does, but there's no way I could sell a horse I'd had for that long. I've had my 16yr old walker since he was 2 and although I don't ride him anymore, I figure he's earned is retirement. He put up with a whole lot from an inexperienced horse owner over the years. I say I'm going to be different with these young horses that I'm raising. I'm going to imprint them, raise them up to be respectful but enjoy the company of people, give them a good training foundation and sell them. I say that's what I'm going to do. I haven't SOLD one yet, and I've got 7 with 2 more due in the spring. Who knows, I may end up with as many horses as Cav has cats! ;o)
I've bought and sold a lot of horses over the years, but never one that I'd had for that long. I must admit that it was a little more difficult.
I'm kind of a "keeper" with pets too. The only ones I have let go were the ones that I spent a lot of time finding good homes for. I suspect I'll probably be that way with horses too:')
Yeah, I'm DEFINATELY going to be picky about who I sell these horses too. I'll probably sell Blade next year to a friend of mine. I could probably get more for him from somebody else but I'd rather let her have him coz I know she'll probably keep him 'til the end of his days.
Over the last 5 years, I finally got confident enough in my riding, to not be so nervous about climbing on different horses. I have found that riding different horses really teaches you alot, and is fun.
So, I've bought and sold a few, and hope to due that on a regular basis. Of course knowing that when you buy one, it is to resale makes it easier. I bought Rusty as a keeper, and I don't really want to, but I would if the price was right:)

Which is why I never want to breed horses.... I am the same as you. I can't even sell my bad pony because I am afraid anyone else would turn her into dog food.
Inge is talking about this thread.
I got to waxing nostalgic about the flight instructors I had in college. My favorite was a retired military guy... would screech and grab his heart when I was too low on approach... Would tell me his wife musta sent me to kill him so she could get rich on his retirement!...
From the thread: "I still LMAO when I hear his voice in my head... "Dammit [Hair] don't kill me now!" He was a riot... everything was loud... He scared a lot of the other girls... called us the girl-type pilots, told my best friend "you wanna fly airplanes? But you're so short your eyes are in your mouth!" No, I still don't know what that means exactly! but he didn't scare me. I loved him."
Yeah - I know how intimidating any kind of instruction can be, but I suppose it should put in perspective any kind of intimidation by some middle aged woman in a riding arena yelling about leg position.
Height is relative if one of you is standing in a hole!
LOL! That was not for me. : )
I peaked. Funny stuff. I'll have to come back to it later this evening:')
Well yeah, lol. I kind of figured that:')
I usually understand what I'm reading . Doing it the hard part. This stumped me though. Do remount on the uphill side. Don't remount on the downhill side of a horse. Stirup harder to reach and horse could be pulled off balance and on top of you.
Are they just saying find something to get higher or put the horse in a lower area or mounting on a slant. If so why would you want to do this? Wouldn't it be better to find a more level spot?
Well I have to get back to the kitchen. I've already threw 2 garbage bags of stuff away and working on the 3rd:')
Eeep! Tarantualas?! *shudders*

I am still laughing and that was a couple of years ago. : )
