They let her sit on him for some closeups, but she isn't a rider and they didn't want her hurt.
Other little tidbit. All the black riders were very small people and women. Small to keep the weight down, their robes and gear weighed 90 pounds by itself.
Good night all - great chatting - we're beat!
They are gorgeous - I snagged them to my desktop. When I redo the composite I'll use those. Today was cold and rainy and I was worrying about hubby's doctor appt tomorrow so I played with pictures.
While doing it though, I thought it would be kind of neat of have a picture that showed all of you with your horses.
After a couple of minutes - he proceeds to SIT DOWN - I kid you not - he is sitting with his front legs out front --- I was shocked. After a bit my dd and I decided this was hysterical and were laughing - somehow I was staying on and thinking what a clown he was... Then I guess he started sinking in soft sand - he tried to get his front feet up on the bank - but they were slipping and we were sliding and splashing muddy water, and flailing all about.... quite a show - I was first worried about him hurting himself and then it dawned on me - "Hey - this horse could fall on you and kill you "- My foot and leg were trapped (still in stirrup) between horse and bank of creek....
Somehow (my guardian angel I believe) I got my foot loose and got up on the bank - then he was down in the water with all 4 legs folded up under him and he stuck his head up under that fallen tree.... I honestly thought he was trapped for good..... I could not budge the tree. I finally convinced him to lower his head and got it back out and he tried and fell back several times but eventually stood up and climbed up the bank of the stream.... He and I and the saddle were covered in muddy water.... we were both shaking like a leaf....
I have tried to figure out what happened - I almost think he was trying to "crawl" under that tree. And the sand was very soft there - almost like quick sand....
Remember - I've only had him about 2 weeks... now that I know he is like this about water - I will be careful next time - I'm grateful neither of us was hurt... although I do have some UGLY bruises ....Anyone else ever *unintentionally* gone swimming with your horse
Oh My - I'll bet that was funny for awhile.
When I was a kid, one of my horses was an indian pony off the reservation. He wouldn't cross water without laying down and rolling. I went through hell trying to make him and finally learned to stay away from creeks or lead him across.
How scary. I'm glad both you and the horse ok. Have you had him back in water? Someone here, I believe Becky , posted that they take their feet out of stirrups when in creeks. One of our horses popped a lead rope and sat back like that. I was out of harms way and laughed too because he looked so funny but then sobered when I realized he could have really hurt himself.
Probably a dumb question but (I'm assuming they roll on their side) which side do you dismount on. I would think you needed to get your leg out of the side going down but you would also be at risk of getting kicked going the other way.

Oh my. It's funny about riding, one minute you're having a great time, next minute you're in mortal danger. Reminds me of that accident scene in The Horse Whisperer, having a blast one second, disaster the second.
My first horse loved to swim and roll in water but my friends and I always rode bareback so it was never a problem. I just kept her out of the water when it was cold. She ALWAYS laid down in water but gave me a second to jump off before she would roll. She NEVER rolled on top of me. If I was quick, I could jump back on before she got up.
Your horses are beautiful. Is Belle trained to ride also?
Belle is the one with the problem I rode for 6 years trying to fix. When she isn't throwing a fit she is a GREAT horse. I won lots of awards with her in competitve trail riding. She just had those moments....

That really sounds scary. Belle, my mare laid down with me 3 times in water. 2 times I stayed on her and as soon as she would start to roll on her side, she felt the stirrup and got back up with me still on:) One time I was riding with someone else and as she went down, the girl hollered at me to get off. I started trying to get off about the time she was coming back up, and I lost my hold and I landed in the puddle she was laying down in.
I don't think she was ever doing it out of meanness, just hadn't learned any better. She only did it those 3 times then no more for years.
