The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

My biggest problem with doing it will be dealing with the people:). I don't know why but around here the English barns are just differnt, different type of people.

When I took Harley over there, and they asked me what I planned on doing with him, you could see the pained expression on their faces when I said barrels. The lady asked how much I had done with him, because the barrel horses she had dealt with in the past were crazies and that wouldn't work. I think that was one reason she was seemed so surprised at how great he worked.

English riding/jumping, is great, and something I would be interested in learning, but around here there is a difinite prejudice against rodeo events from the riders, and I don't know how well I would do ignoring it:)

That's sad. It's mixed around here. If anything when western riders see the english, it's like awww, look. The owner trains both and sometimes I think a little of each:') Maybe it's there but since I'm not in any cliques I don't see it. It's more, whatever you want to do.

English riding people are generally stuck up and think they are better than everybody else. The dressage people are the worst.

I've visited at several barns since my daughter has taken alot of english/jumping lessons and the snootiness seems universal in the english riding genre. I've only found one instructor that I absolutely loved and she was so great I took some lessons from her. It was a ladies class, several easy going, nice women and we all supported each other, laughed, clapped, congratulated each other and generally had a wonderful time. The instructor moved away and I was so disappointed. I've never found anyone else like her. Her name was Susan Aune, if anyone ever runs into her. I think she's in California now.

I think you could change their minds a little.... I think many in the english set think rodeo sports are just cowboy types that get on, slap the horse around the barrels, break them down and toss them. They don't know or don't see anyone that spends the time you do to train and condition them for the sport.

Any sport causes injuries from time to time, English riders are dealing with fitness and soundness issues too, they just don't ~see~ gamers doing the conditioning and gymnastics that might prevent some of the wear and tear. On that you can be an ambassador of sorts for both sports.

LOL...I don't know how good of an ambassador I would make. No tact:) and I know I don't tolerate snottiness well.

I think at this barn where Harley was tho, there is alot of afternoon time where there wouldn't be any others there. Might be a good time of day for me to go, if she even gives lessons then. At least till I get comfortable. I'm going to have to do alot of thinking about it tho. I definitly want the saddle, just not sure about the lessons.

Take a couple lessons to get a bit comortable with a different seat... You don't ~need~ all the finishing that show people would get from a LOT of lessons, unless it ends up interesting to you to go further.

If the lady doesn't have another job, she'd probably do an afternoon lesson. She probably typically has to schedule everyone else around work or school.

You went to school in FT Worth, right?

I'm as far south as you can get. I live in Brownsville. My husband and I are both nurses and we were transfered here about 14 years ago. We only planned on staying a year but still here. Hopefully we will retire around Abilene.

Yes, I went to Western Hills, graduated in 1980. If memory serves, you went to Paschal. I had a few riding buddies that went to Paschal, same age as me.

I love Brownsville! Many moons ago, when I was 12 or 13, my dad got transferred there and we lived in a little club area, called Valley International Country Club, for a month. My dad was there for several months but would come home on the weekends. We took that month to live with him as a summer vacation. I have nothing but good memories of that time.

My in-laws live in Abilene. I think the prettiest area in West Texas is near Abilene, in a little town called Buffalo Gap. Have you ever been there?
