Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I very seldom cussed around my kids but it's kind of like riding a bicycle I guess. It comes back to you:')
Can you post notices at the farm where you board? If so, offer to lease for board to students for lessons and showing. Also post at the local feed stores.
Contact local 4H club to see if any 4Hers would like to lease them for awhile. They could ride and show in 4H shows.
Check to see what the area Horseman's Associations are and if anyone wants to lease them. You would be best off finding a student, high school or college or someone from a 4H club I think.
How far are you from Atlanta?
Also area Arab Associations.
And if you email one of us some pictures, I think we can post them here for you.
Good morning
Becky
Good morning!
Been looking over your trail riding pictures. You have good trails and I like the water crossings too.
AAM, This woman is asking for advice on holding things together in her situation, see posts at 1,657 and 1,820
Good mornin' Becky. More barn building today. I think we'll finish the new doors if we're lucky!
Good thing, it's pouring out. Last night I let Bay and the pony share the big stall, they get along well enough, but I think the pony got trapped outside with Bay standin' in the doorway like a doof most of the night.:~D
Poor pony:)
Looks like a nice day here. Trash is leaving today. Unless I start today, tomorrow my two go back to work seriously.
Mack was even saying yesterday, he thinks I should presue marketing Harley as an English Horse. Wants me to get an English saddle and maybe even a few lessons form the Lady at "that place". She was nice, and was as flabbergasted as I by the way things went. I'm rather stunned by Mack:). Even tho I think English riders have more finesse then Western. And to tell the truth, I think English Horses are prettier moving then Western Pleasure horses. When I got to shows, I like the English classes best.
Who knows. I have been thinking of getting English tack, just hadn't ever thought of persuing it to the level Mack suggested. I'll have to think about it.
Becky
Wow! Considering a religion change! ;~D
I think English lessons for you would be fun!
Good Morning, all.
Becky, I totally agree with you on English riders having more finesse than Western. I think the top level jumper riders are the best in the business. There's a couple of them that ride as gracefully as a ballerina dances.
Refresh my memory, why are you selling Harley? I'm starting to get the people and horses here confused.
Morning everyone.
Good morning! By the way, everyone, my name is Brenda. You don't have to call me Tuffy ;)
Hi Brenda. I'm Janis, JC or Cindy. Take your pick! So many Janices at work that JC my nickname. (Cindy really my dogs name) :')
Janis will be easiest for me to remember. I need to write down everyone's first name with their horses names so I can keep them straight. My memory isn't what it used to be.
Cindy is darling name for a dog. My blue heeler is Bluebonnet, a huge black lab is Precious, male mini schnauzer is Scottie and and his sister is Trixie. I hate to admit it, but Scottie is my favorite.
I'm Diana, but most people call me Hair ;~D
Cindydawg came from the pound. She was named there. To me , it really didn't fit her but she answered to it , so I added the dawg. My husband choose the spelling. When he got a dalmation a little later he named him Charlie Dog:')
Harley was a project:)
SEveral times when I have found a good quality horse that I can buy for a good price, I buy it, ride it awhile then resale for some profit. Harley was practically given away for as good a horse as he is. I'm not really in a hurry to sale him, and he would be a good horse for me to learn this stuff on. The thing I would like to learn the most, is getting a horse to break at the polls. I've never really learned how to get a horse to do that well. If I get one that already knows how, I have no problems, but teaching one to do it is a different story for me. Rusty didn't do it, was bad to go with his nose pointing out, he's better, but I could still use some pointers about it.
I also think English riders have better balance, probably because they have less saddle to help them with that:)
I bought Harley to train on barrels, which I still think he would do great, but this would give me more versatility at marketing one like him when I get them.
I've come to the conclusion that a horse could do both barrels and English, not Western pleasure, IF you can keep their mind in tact. English horses move more free, and cover more ground anyway, so it would not mess up any barrel training. In fact the technique of English riding is part of making a barrel turn in the most effeicent way. So many people think that barrel horses neck rein around the barrels and that's just not it at all.
Anyway, I've thought over the last year, especially after getting Harley that I could really learn alot from English riding. Be something different too.....
Becky
Go for it, if it's something you want to do :')
When I went out to feed this morning, I decided instead of trying to ride today, I'm going to work on my arena. Trash will be gone, that's where he stays, and the guys got the bobcat fixed this past week. My arena is in terrible shape. Since it's time to put my two back to work, I want it ready to go, so that is what I'm doing today.
