Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Did he die from eating the bowl or the tylenol.
Becky
That's a new one on me. I didn't know rabbits would eat a plastic bowl.
Yeah, I remember:')
My husband didn't even wave his arms. I saw the whole thing, Tuffy was running up behind my husband, I started screaming, husband turns around and sees Tuffy coming and goes along his merry way, not responding to a 1300 pound, 16 hand frantic horse heading straight for him. Sounds kinda comical, doesn't it?
I think the plastic. He was in a lot of pain. Might have even been something else and he chewed the bowl up in stress . Tylenol kills the liver and takes awhile. I got a lot of teasing about it though.
Horses getting loose here is a big fear for me, because I am on a busy road. The pony got loose one time, when she slipped out during feeding and the front gate was open. (I always have two gates between them and freedom - all but once!)
It scared me to death. I grabbed grain and a rope, but I knew there was no point in trying to catch her, she was running back and forth fairly near the fenceline and very proud of herself, showing off to Bay, who was having an absolute FIT on the inside. I was able to just kind of herd her back into the yard, but only after about the third run, she didn't want the game to end yet. After I closed the gate behind her, I had to sit for about half an hour till I could clear my head of the visions of her running into traffic.
A neighbor horse did get loose here once, and ran down the road. The girls from the store next door ran to me and told me there was a horse loose and I grabbed grain and a halter and lead rope and jumped into a car with some bystander guy and headed down the road half a mile. There she was, being chased by a bunch of bystanders who thought they could just run her down, I guess ;~D, no grain, no rope, no nothing to catch her with if she did stop. I shook the grain bucket and she ran right to me. She had tired of the game and was really looking for a friend to save her I think. She was a young (yearling?) Bay horse, barefoot and feet all tore up from being on the road (and probably poor foot care before that). I walked her down the road back toward my place and said "She's just a baby. Any idea where she lives?" "She's not a baby, she's a pony, and she lives next to the store" they said. "No.... that's ~my~ Bay pony next to the store, and this is not mine!" Hmmmmmm..... I was gonna just go turn her loose in my pasture till we figured it out, but a few folks had some ideas, and we found where she came from. The horse owner wasn't there, but the lady she rents pasture from was. We knocked on her door, explained what happened and where I lived, put her in a different field and left. In hindsight, I wish I'd have just put her in mine till the owner came around. I never heard from her... she never stopped by to thank anyone for catching the thing, and the horse's feet didn't get trimmed or fixed in the near future, I went over an looked. Phoooey on people.
Well I have to get out of here. Gonna go check on the horses and fine my trainer. She supposed to have called me when she got back into town.
I hope you mean 'find' ;~D
.Oops lol
It must be the season for running over dogs. I hope your pup is doing ok. When I was cantering around in my last lesson, I manged to run over my trainer's young mini hot-dog dog. (My brain just can't process the right spelling right now.) He was running around and running around the ring, not getting under foot at all, and I had always managed to avoid him. Well I was cantering on a 20 M circle, and he ran in front of me, got scared, and LAID DOWN. I had no time to react at all. He crawled over to his mom, and you could tell by the look on his face that he got knocked around. But he stayed out of the ring after that!
:-)
I'll keep an eye on Gidget today then ;~\ I don't need a vet bill right now ;~D
They don't show anybody getting seriously hurt but there are some baaaad wrecks. You have to buy the video from Amazon or somebody else that has them, I've never seen it on TV.
That's funny about that guy bowing. On Thrills and Spills somebody has a spectacular wreck then gets up and bows. Gotta have a sense of humor. Oh, www.statelinetack.com has the video and I think there are 2 parts. I've only seen Part 1.
I'm not near any busy roads and my outside gates are a long way from the house so it really wasn't big deal that the horses got out. I just wanted to catch them before they got around the house and tore up the yard.
What is it with people that they chase horses? What were those idiots going to do if they actually caught the horse? That's like dogs chasing cars, what are they planning to do if they catch one? Drive?
You should have kept that horse, they probably wouldn't have looked for it. Doesn't sound like they cared about it anyway.
I was surprised that the lady didn't stop by.... I'd have been thankful for one, but also a little curious about what had happened if my horse got out and ran down the road. That horse is still over there, along with a nice older black horse. I look in on them from time to time. They have good pasture and apparently someone waters them. Their feet are always mildly to moderately unkept, but always just barely good enough that I wouldn't get someone involved to investigate their care more.
Sortof morbidly funny story that I always think of related to that horse in the road:
About a week earlier, I had a plumber here who was really strange in a lot of ways, but the most memorable was that when he was all done and walking out to his truck, he gazed out at the horses and said "Do you ever know anyone who has a horse die?" or something equally odd like that. While I blinked at him, he said "Because I have a couple cats and I am always looking for sources of meat". I said "You must have a lot of cats!" He said "I have two tigers". I stood ~blinking~. He said "I usually buy whole turkeys and outdated meat from stores, and the county will call me to road kill deer, but I got a dead horse once and it was great." I said "Well, my old horse there will die someday, and disposal of any kind is something to consider, but it never occurred to me to feed him to a tiger". He said "Well, keep it in mind" he said." I said that if Bay was ever put down, he'd be one of the things I thought of, at which time he said he would want him only if he died naturally or was shot.... not if he'd been put down with drugs. I said "After more than twenty years of service, this horse is not going to be shot with a gun under any circumstance, but rather put down with nice pleasant drugs, if need be." As a courtesy, I said I'd keep him in mind if one of my horses happened to die of natural causes.
Well, about a week later, I am in a car headed down the road and see this neighbor's loose horse running down the street. My first thought was "Tiger Food".
;~D
Becky and Cindy may have heard my story above before, it's one I like to tell, but I don't think beaker has. ;~D
Time to get ready.... my Dad is coming down today to help cut and frame new stall doors! :~D
Ya'll are crackin' me up today. Actually, what that guy is suggesting is a cheap way to get rid of a horse body. Having one buried can be very expensive. One hit by a car would be a real find for a tiger owner, it's already tenderized. Sorry, that was bad.
I would never have a horse shot because it's just too violent for my tastes but for the horse, I think it's an easier way for it to go. I've seen 2 horses put to sleep and I thought it would be easy, they would just drift off to heaven. No such luck, they both fought it, kicking and writhing on the ground. It was a nightmare. Somebody else told me they had seen a horse shot in the head and the horse drops immediately, no fighting.
