The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

How's the palomino doing? Tied her up any more?

The horse I'm riding for someone else should leave tomorrow. I'll probably ride him today for the last time. Then on Mon. my two are getting a wake up call:). Easy life over.

She's doing much, much better. I haven't tied her up again, I've been keeping her separate from the other horses in an area that she can see them but not interact. Seems to have done the trick. I am going to leave her tied some more, she does need to learn more patience. A couple of days ago she was really running back and forth so I put a cc of Ace in her feed, to see if it would calm her down. I didn't want to give her a shot, I wanted to see if the Ace would work in feed. I left the house afterwards and came back a couple of hours later and went out to check on her. She was flat on her side in the round pen, not moving. I thought, oh great, I've killed her. She bounced up when she heard me, thank goodness. You could hear my sigh of relief from a mile away.

Good. I think keeping horses in seperate runs even if it's just for part of a day, especially one prone to being herd bound, is good for them.

It's cold here this morning, I had to turn the heat on:). But later it should be nice for a good ride. I'll try to remember to take the camera and get some pictures of the turning trees.

Where are you? I'm near Dallas, hasn't been cold here, yet. I think fall is the most beautiful time to ride, I love the changing seasons and the gorgeous fall colors. Please do send some pictures. I'm going to get my husband to figure out how to post pics on here and show me how. My little brain isn't understanding how this is done.

I had to have the help of my, husband AND several people from FR:). It's not hard once you do it,there is just a lot of steps.

I'm near Tulsa, OK. The major change in trees hasn't really started yet, but I noticed Wed. when I rode that it has started. It's about 45 here now. Probably not cold to some:), but our house has always been very cold natured, maybe becasue of all the trees. Lot's of times it's warmer out side then inside. Great in the summer:).

Being a new horseperson, I need someone to tell me if it is normal for me to find a tooth in my horses bucket. He is 3 yrs. old.
Are these baby teeth? Should I have the vet look at him?

Yesterday, late afternoon, Rusty ran over the top of Grizzly. I knew it was a matter of time. In the last couple of weeks he has been bad to toment Rusty and Harley, by getting IN FRONT of them and barking and jumping up in their faces. He's on three legs now. It doesn't look broke, just a tiny bit of swelling, and a small cut. If it was broke wouldn't he be showing more pain, crying, whining, not setting it down at all?? He does touch the ground with it once in a while. He did squall for a bit after it happened. Should I wrap it? I guess if he is still gimping this bad by Mon. I'll run him to the vet. He's making a wide circle now around the horses runs. I hope he learned his lesson. The heeler I use to have never learned, but she always took kicks to the head that knocked her out, so I don't think she ever knew what happened. He knows exactly what happened.

Buckethead is my catch-all term for someone (or something) acting like a doofus. I got the name from a girlfriend years ago (high school) who had a boyfriend that her dad didn't like. One night the boyfriend was over visiting, dad being in the next room. Dad yells out, "Is Buckethead still here?" He was, and within earshot. That always cracked me up.

LOL...fathers have such a way with their daughters boyfriends.

We had some kid show up here once to see Jenny when she was about 16. They were outside visiting, Mack came out and shot off his shotgun, looked over at them and said seems to be working fine, and went back in the house. Never saw that one again:)

Dogs is soooo stooopid.

I have 4 and they torment the horses every now and then. It's just a matter of time before they get nailed. I'd just watch Grizzly until Monday and see what happens. It sure is hard to feel sorry for these dogs when they were asking for it.

At the place where I bought the Palomino they had a sign on a tree at the head of the drive that said, "Old Dog, Young Dog, Several Stupid Dogs Please Drive Carefully"

Oh no, that is toooo funny!! I'll have to remember that one, my oldest daughter is 15 and not dating yet.

In the movie Clueless, the girl brings her boyfriend in to meet her dad. The dad says, "Anything happens to my daughter tonight, I've got a .45 and a shovel. I doubt anyone would miss you."

Yeah, I don't feel too sorry for him. I feel more sorry for the horses. I had hoped he wouldn't start this. He's 1/2 catahoula, 1/2 heeler. I swore when the last one got killed from a kick to the head I wouldn't have anymore heelers. He looks catahoula, so I hoped his mind was too:) We need a good outside guard dog for coyote patrol, and he has been doing good for that. It's just been the last few weeks that he's started this thing with the horses. He's a year old now.

Mack always told Jenny he had a pond picked out where he could hide a body and no one would ever find it if she brought home a dork:)

Luckily she married a great guy, but Mack still tells her, I can still put him in that pond if he gets out of line:)

Your judgment on whether it seems bad enough to be broke is probably good, but you never know! Is the point of pain at a joint or on a long bone? Back leg or fore? It's not easy to wrap dog legs where they will successfully leave it alone and not tear the wrapping off. I've dealt with that a lot with Gidget's neurotic hot spots.
