The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Do a "free" lease, IOWs find someone who will take them both at no charge from you.

They can use them for free except for their up keep until you get back on your feet.

You should have no problem finding someone who would do this.

I agree with Mack - let someone have them for a year to ride, they pay all the expenses. Possibly even let someone lease the mare for free to raise a foal.

If that fails, see if one of the buyers wants both so that they go together. I've been where you are and had to watch seven babies go down the road. I just worked the best deals I could for the best homes and managed to get three to one home and four to another. God works in mysterious ways sometimes. The people that bought them love them as much as I did.

Right now, I am "free leasing" a mare that a friend couldn't afford to take care of properly. She'll raise a baby or too and eventually go back to her mom (who comes to see her often)

I LOVE RFDTV! They've got SO many good horse oriented shows. I could watch it all day. They're the main reason I got a dish, other than there's no cable where I live now. But even if there were, I'd keep my dish, just because of them. I like Clinton Anderson too. He does a lot of really practical, useable shows.

I love all the horse programs! The quality of filming leaves alot to be desired but the shows are always informative. I don't ride english very well but my favorite programs are Dressage Connection and Showjumping Unplugged. The horses are so big and beautiful and so well trained. If I could find a decent dressage coach I'd take lessons.

Lynn Palm is on RFD TV right now and she's riding one beautiful horse.

A few years ago, we saw Lynn Palm ride "Superhorse" Rugged Lark, at the Quarter Horse Congress, on his farewell tour. That was the most beautiful demonstration. She put him thru his paces bridless. It brought tears to your eyes, when she rode him around the area waving at the crowd. Rugged Lark tilted his head towards the people, as his way of saying goodbye. It was great!

I was going to suggest what Big Mack suggested and free lease them. I'm sure someone will jump at the chance. I know that I would. The last thing that I would do is sell these horses, with what you're going through. Divorce is absolutely horrible for all involved, and I'm very truely sorry. :-(

I LOVE watching the dressage grand prix freestyles on RFDTV. Absolutely fantastic. Dressage is what I'm leaning towards right now. I have a great instructor, even though she yells at me alot, and is a tough cookie. I've learned more from her in a few monthes than I have from years with my other instructor. I've never seen Showjumping Unplugged.

Well I just got back from the hospital about an hour ago after being there since 11 this morning. (It's now 7:30. EST) My grandfather is ok and thrilled to be home. He dragged my mother to the door when she tried to help him up the stairs. Pretty good for an 87 year old. I'm beat, though. It was an interesting day. The fellow in the other bed didn't know quite know how to keep his jonny shut.

Needless to say, no riding for me today. :-/ I shall have to attempt to make ammends with my trainer. It may be a blessing in disguise however, because my joints were bothering me because of the damp weather and it was nasty and cold out.

I just got home myself. I was going out to the stables but it's almost dark. My g drive keeps going out at work and I had to finish my weights today. Finally got it finished.

This may sound cold, but you've got to prioritize. If the horse is more important than the house, make the sacrifice, buy a single wide trailer and keep the horse. Otherwise, sell the horse and be done with it.

Cowgirl Up.

(I think this is an example of compassionate conservatism)
btw, I've been through a similar situation recently myself....you know....divorce and all that goes with it.

I wish.

Good morning to everyone from the token male on this thread.

I've got dem south Florida blues. Yes I'm back down in the land of HARY (Hub for Arrogant Relocated Yankees). So, I won't be riding this weekend. As a matter of fact, my next scheduled trip home is not until Thanksgiving. But I'll be there for a week and will definitely put some wear on my saddle then.

I'm thinking about bringing a horse down here. If any of you know of a possible boarding place in the Palm Beach County area, let me know. The weather is getting almost decent enough to have pleasant ride.

For those of you that are riding today, Happy Trails!

I rode Tuffy yesterday (Friday) for the first time in a couple of weeks. He was a buckethead. He's always that way on the first ride after a long time off. He'll be fine today.

I'm leaning towards dressage also but I haven't been able to find a good instructor. I don't like being yelled at, takes all the fun out of it for me.

Showjumping Unplugged is just highlights from stadium jumping competitions. Have you ever seen a video called Thrills and Spills? It's cross country and show jumping wrecks. Some of it is really funny.
