The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Can I delay the hay for an hour or so though?

I'm going to guess you aren't feeding yours an enormous quantity of pellets/grain, and you could work them starting out lightly after 30 minutes or so... They ~can~ wait between pellets and hay, what is the situation that you want them to? Is the situation that you are arriving there in the evening around feeding time and you are wondering how to coordinate your ride with dinner?

Good Morning - We had good news from the farrier - the crack in the Bay's hoof has closed after only 3 weeks - the improper shoeing and the improper trim were just making it worse -

My ds asked when he "might" be able to ride him - he said lets give him 3 months - then we would evaluate it....

- so a warning to all to be sure you know something about your farrier.... I just used the one that was used by the others where we had him boarded... He even re-acted to that farrier - wide-eyed - pooped constantly until he had watery diarrhea. By contrast the first visit with the natural trimmer his foot was so sore he could not stand on it for him to trim the other front hoof ..... but he never acted frightened - stood perfectly still..... now I'm kicking myself for not realizing something was terribly wrong....

He pulled the shoes off my new paint - said he has great feet - so at least we have 2 we can ride....

Yeah. I do lessons at 4 so I start getting ready around 3. Sarah Lee got hungry when she heard the workers filling troughs in the barn so I gave her a scoop (1 1/2 pds) in her bucket outside loosely saddled (not briddled of course) but just wondering if I need to put her in a stall and give her hay too. Tue she seemed tired and doing a little coughing while riding and she went right to the water, then hay when I turned her out which was unusual for her. She most of the time wants back out. It's a time saver the way I did it but I'm not sure if best for her.

If you are going to give her the pellets I might do it first, before grooming or saddling, it just gives her more time to digest before the ride while you do the other stuff.

If you were feeding racehorse quantities of grain, it might be a problem, but you aren't.

Most important, how are the rides going on her? Are the other people still working her too? how is she doing? any more signs of trouble?

They sure feed early at that barn. I would guess their feeding gets in the way of a lot of people who are coming by after work.

Good. She is getting rode 6 days a week for the next 3 months. I give her Sundays off. (mighty generous of me,huh? :') She's been very docile. I agreed to let the "what happened?" go since I'll probably never know. Tue the trainer walked with me. Today she's gonna saddle up. We went all over the place and she showed me some bad habits I had picked up teaching myself and some stuff I didn't know like going up and down hills. After about 15 minutes I was having a good time. I stay on guard though. Kind of funny actually. She stopped once and dropped her head a little and I felt her butt coming up and I'm thinking "Oh, hell no", and pointed her nose up. The instructor asked me what I was doing and I told her, "keeping her head up and making her walk". She told me "ok, but she's trying to poop and it might be easier on her if you stopped and gave her some rein":')

LOL! Is she about to kill me or does she need to poop? These and other important questions!

Glad the rides are going well, and it sounds like you are getting along with the trainer well... ??

Yeah. She's the most conservative horse person I know so I know she's going to be watching me and the horse like a hawk.

It/s not raining here, but is windy and pretty cold for here:) The sun is shining, so I may ride this afternoon.

So your lesson was Tue., I thought it was today. I'm glad it went well. LOL...alot of people think horses should keep moving when they poop. I've been fussed at by some because I let them stop. I always ask them do you walk around when you'r pooping:). Their answer is always, I'm not a horse. Horses loose will always stop to poop, so saying that is not a good argument. They do hump up their back some when they poop, so it can be scary on one that has bucked before. Nothing wrong with being on guard.

Hair after I take this picture of Harley, do I just post it here. Is just shrinking it enough to cut down on the bytes it uses? That is what I have to do to post it. Not use so many bytes.

I think it depends on the horse, I've seen horses out loose defecate at the canter without looking like they are even thinking about slowing down.

Let us know what the limits are.... the byte size is a combination of the picture dimension (size), as well as the resolution or compression quality. Let us know the max actual size of the pic, as well as the max byte size, and we will do it for you and post. We can post it here and you could copy it and that copy will work.

Show horses definately get 'used' to pooping on the move, because you can't break to let them. Me, I let Bay stop. I just ride trail now, and stopping to poop is one of the luxuries I allow him in his old age ;~D

I think it helps to lean forward and get the weight off their loin when they poop. It's a lot of work for Bay to raise is back up with me sitting there.

What does it hurt, if it's not a matter of showing? If they stop that must be the most comfortable for them. Okie a gentleman. He waits til he gets back to the pasture and likes to stop too. Sarah Lee, the hussy just goes whenever:') Probably from being on a dude trail. (Can yall believe we are discussing this lol)
