The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I don't think it stresses their back too much more as long as you don't slam down into the saddle when you throw your leg over. That applies whether the horse is parked out or not. I always cringe when I see some people mount up and come down in the saddle like a ton of bricks and their horses backs give like a suspension bridge in a gale force wind. It hurts me just watching it so I can imaging how their horses feel.

A ditch, a hill, a stump, ~something

What does mounting on the uphill or downhill side mean?

Did the Park Ranger bring them back in cuffs? : )

They went on a 7 1/2 mile trail. We (her mom and I) waited awhile and then went to see if we could borrow flashlights to shine so they could see the way back. They showed up about the time the ranger did. He was concerned that there was an older couple still out, way behind them. Her mom and I were worried about bears and mountain lions but they were just having a good "ole time". My 31 y/o son laughed when I told him he wasn't at Disney Land. He's a good survivor but when it comes to navigation... He has lot's of stories of when he was a medic in the Army about how he would got lost and would show up hrs or a day later:').

I come down really soft. I'm just working on getting on faster so I don't stand in the stirup or drag my right leg over.

HMM, Not on that trail, I bet. lol. I got sick so I didn't hike it. My husband did though. He said the going down ok but the coming up gets you. We are just above sea level here. At about 6000 feet he was sucking O's. He went off the trail and flagged down a car and got a ride half way up:')

Eddie and I took Okie off the iron tonight. He kept kicking his bucket around and not really eating much of the oil until Sarah came over to his bucket. Then it was "back off woman" and he wolfed it down:')

I need to ask yall a question. When I groom Sarah Lee she energetically will rub her neck on the pole. I only tell her to quit when I'm working in that area or she's moving about. I know not to let her use me as a scratching post and it doesn't really bother me unless it's a bad habit. Should I let her do it? I hadn't thought much about it until the vet frowned and made a comment when he saw her doing it.

I guess that's why I just went to get a flashlite:') Lot's of times he flew in after dark. My mom would shine the headlights on the runway. Dad would buzz the house and off we went. The few times he probably went over instead of under the high lines.

What do you mean by rubbing her neck on a pole? Does she do it when you don't groom her?

When I clip her to the pole in the barn to groom her. I haven't seen her do it elsewhere but I don't spend a lot of time there when she's in the stall. The vet just kind of frowned.
