The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

"BTW, your medicine hat gelding is beautiful. Did you mention, what breed he was?

Thank you - I am really enjoying him - the rain held off so we did get to ride this afternoon... We don't have papers on him - our friend that knows much more about horses thinks he is a QH with possibly some Saddlebred - he has this way of carrying his neck/head - very tall and regal - not sure any of my photos captured that.....

That cowboy link was posted on FR - I agree - lots of good memories -

No rain here this weekend, it has been beautiful. I took off work on Friday, to get plants and bulbs in. We worked on the fence, and it's finally done. The Arabian mare (Jody) and the Quarter filly (Biscuit), hit it off right away. Here is a shot of them, and new fence, we replace in back. Brush still needs to be cleaned up, on the left side.

Looks gorgeous! I love that no-climb horse fence.... we've put some of it up here, around the yard, and I wish my whole fence could be made of that!

I have had some blanket straps get ripped in the pasture, but always repairable. It is vital that the straps not be long enough to get a foot through, but the blankets themselves are really pretty durable, Bay and the pony are starting their third year in the same blanket. The straps do have a breakaway fabric on them and when they have snagged them on something in the woods, the straps will rip out without ripping the whole blanket, and I just have to repair the strap.

Well I was wrong:) Imagine that...LOL.

The horse is a roan, but I took his picture anyway. The pictures don't show his color much, other then his head being solid black. That should have clued me. Roans heads never have the roaning like thier body. HIs tail also is solid. I think a grays would have started changeing by now.

Years ago on a visit to Missouri, I was fortuate enough to see Wapiti and Coke Roberds on Jim Wild's Flying W ranch. Your stud reminds me of Wapiti. Does the "Secretary" in his name, go back to "First Secetary"? IIRC, wasn't "Secretariat" test bred to an Wapiti bred Appaloosa?

Your dark bays match each other well too. I am looking out at my bays, who are all very close to the same light reddish bay. You'd think we planned it for photographic purposes ;~D

Yes, it does. He looks like he would have a nice head and tail carriage. They call those Saddlebreds with color, Spotted Saddle horses. Very elegant. I bet he is smooth.

I second those horses look beautiful, almost twins :)

Yes, Sonny is a grandson of Secretariat, his sire was First Secretary. And yes, First Secretary was the test breeding on an App mare.

We are hoping he'll compete and do well in endurance here. He's got the gaits and sure has the will (can not stand another horse to past him - makes him pour on the gas).

We just got him the end of May, he had been standing in a small pipe corral for ten years and was thin and depressed. He is a real pussycat though, thoroughly enjoyed being broke to ride and looks forward to trail time.

I would have loved to meet Coke Roberds. He bred and raised some great horses. I'd like to know what his vision was for the appaloosa horse.

I love that no-climb horse fence.

So do I. The two sides are regular woven wire, and the front is board. The woven wire, will be replaced with the no climb, when needed. Many times, we have had to cut the woven wire, when a hoof, got caught in it.

The timmer works great on nice level ground, but what a struggle in that pasture..lol

Thank you, but the fall colors, mean winter is on its way. :( The barn was a garage, when we moved here, and we had the loft put on. It can hold 1500 bales, but we never need, that much.

We should photo shop all our bays together. :)

his sire was First Secretary

I saw First Secretary on display, when he was a foal, at the Appaloosa Nationals in Columbus, Oh. He certainly sired some nice foals, by the looks of your stud.

It's good you got him out of that pipe corral, and into a decent home. Good luck with him.
