The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'm a bit irritated right now too:)

A man moved in about a year ago on some land behind us. He has to use a road that runs along the side of our property, which in reality IS our property. When we fenced we COULD have fenced across it but since the road was used by other to check oil wells behind us we just went up the side of it.

When this guy was ready to move his double wide back there, he asked if he could trim some of my trees, he has also graveled it which I didn't particularly like but hey, we all need to get along, he has done some mowing which makes our place more visible to neighbors that I didn't particularly want done. In short I'm trying to say I've went along to get along.

This summer he ran a fence on the back of his property because he said he paid alot to have that line surveyed and didn't want to loose track of it. I understand. He did not fence in his whole property, just the back line. The fence went across one of the main trails I use, but I picked my way around it. I'm the only one that uses it, he knows that, but today when I went back there he had piled brush at the end I go around. Obviously to stop me. I don't understand. It's his property He can do what he wants, BUT that road he uses to get to his house is my property, and I haven't up till now stopped him from doing what he needs to do to make it accessible for him, which has also made it more accessible for others that have no business back there.

My understanding of the law is, (btw, I should say that road is the county line) if the county needs and maintains a section line road, then they have easements rights. BUT until THEY do it we can keep others from using it??? IOW's I CAN stop him from using it???? since the road is NOT maintained by the county????

I am going to talk to him civilly first, and find out what the deal is. I just don't understand WHY he is putting me in this postion in the first place. People, can be so frustrating.

Becky

People are extremely frustrating.

There is good law on property lines and easements, we've had some complex property line issues and 'use' easements at our beach house, but I'd be wrong prolly if I tried to tell you what the law is.

Good luck talking to him first.

Well, if you have had these type of problems you know more then me. I have gathered my info from hearsay, the company that put our fence up said we could run the fence across that road, that until it was developed by the county it was our property to do as we wanted. But since there were oil wells behind us that were checked daily we didn't want to cause problems and get in legal battles.
I don't think it's right to land lock people from thier property. But there is another way in. But this was the easiest for the guy to use, and he has done alot of work to make it a nicer road.

He also told me I could go around the fence at the other end....it just doesn't make sense. The end that he blocked is way off in the woods, and you can tell no one else is going around it. It's far from his house, so it's not like I'm infringing on his privacy.

I don't know about where you are but here we have so many feet of easement rights around our property. We can do whatever we want with it except build on it. If a fence or plants have to come down for something they put it back. My neighbors yard really got tore up bad for some drainage pipes but they cleaned up nice. I think talking to him the best route. He may have just thrown brush there without thinking about you. We have a neighbor up north that drives me nuts. He wanted to buy 20 feet and we refused. We let him come over to get to his back but he "moves in" He keeps the side mowed down though and watches the place though so I guess we "get" too. He's not gonna be happy when we put up a fence. He can still walk over but it's gonna cramp him.

For my morning patrol around the perimiter I have to have a coat, but by 10, it's warm and sunny, highs in the 70.

Sunny and 77 right now! :o) Supposed to be in the 70s the next two days, although with a chance of rain on Friday. Sunny and mid-60s for the weekend. I'm planning to take the kids to pick apples and pumpkins.

I would love to post a thread for advice and support, but I'm reluctant to post a vanity because there have been a lot of those lately. The problem is, is that this campus is easily 99% democratic, with everyone expressing the same views about the war. It's very difficult to find anyone who sees the other side. I've talked to some people about it, and no one can seem to understand what I'm saying. I can keep trying, though. This protest was done by the "non violent coalition" which is a long fancy phrase for people who just want to make it all go away. :-)
It's a campus protest, so only people on campus see it, but still...
I think I will post that thread after all.

"Our pastures flooded by the gates with about 20 feet of water."

Relocate your gate to dry ground or make a new small gate that can you let your horses out or in with. 20ft of water is a large flood.

"A man moved in about a year ago on some land behind us."

Buy him out. May be a little expensive but well worth it.

Hm! Go back and look at the land at the end of a five mile dirt road....

My land is a quarter of a mile or more away from a county road. : )

Yeah right. It has rained just about every day and we can't get in. I would love a place like that. Probably not realistic though.
